Can anyone suggest a good setup for a 29 gallon? I was thinking of having a centerpiece fish or two, 2 schools of 6 of Tetras and/or Barbs/Rasboras and a bottom feeder. Please recommend #'s and types of fish that would work. I am not new to fishkeeping.

I'm basically in the same boat as you... 30g just now restocking.

I just finished stocking yesterday with 12 Tiger barbs and one Rainbow shark. They're all little babies right now, but the large school still looks awesome. A similar setup may be what you're looking for. Try this:

1 Pictus Cat (if not too big... please check my math)
6 Tiger Barbs
6 Gold Barbs

An Angel or smaller gourami would make a good centerpiece. Then look for schooling fish that you like and will get along with your centerpiece. Good bottom feeders are otos, corries, smaller plecs, and the smaller catfish. My suggestion would be to go to your pet store, write down the names of the fish that you like, and post them here

Pictus probably wouldn't work since they get at least 6-8 inches, and like company. Angels get too big, IMO, for 29 gallons. Mine is at least 10 inches tall right now, and that just looks wrong in such a small tank. I would do:

1 gourami (pearls, dwarves, or moonlights )
6 cories (preferably not the larger kinds like pepper or aeneus)
8 Harlequin rasboras (these are GREAT schoolers)
6 cherry barbs/ gold barbs/ rummynose tetras (also great schoolers)

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

I would go:
2 gouramis (Pearls, dwarfs or 1 moonlight or blue.)
8 rummy nose or lemon tetras (Georgous)
6 black neon tetras (Their black contrast would look stunning!)
8 Small corys (Not pepper or bronze or albino as they get 3"

Try this:

1 male/female pair of Laetacara curviceps Flag Cichlids (nice and peaceful)

8 Panda Corys

8 Rosy Tetras

4 Otocinclus for algae eating

That lot should live quite nicely in a 29G.

Decorate with bogwood arches, Java Ferns and Java Moss to give the Pandas a playground and the Flag Cichlids somewhere to call home too, and pop a flat rock with rounded edges in to give the Flag Cichlids a spawning substrate when they grow up. But watch that the Pandas don't help themselves to some caviar if the Cichlids spawn in that setup

u mentioned you want bottom feeder, but cories are good bottom feeders + they are schooling fish

this is crazy, i was just writing down if i redo my 29g, what would i stock... this is what i got...

1 angel (middle)
2 dwarf gourami (top)
5 cherry barbs and/or 5 rummy nose tetra (middle)
4 oto (all over + glass ) and/or 4 small cories (bottom)

depends on how much light and plant u'll have, u might not need the otos, if heavily planted, then u might wanna increase the otos

There have been some good suggestions so far. I would just add that a pair of keyholes would be a nice centerpiece, and don't rule out loaches for the bottom

Thanks for all the great suggestions. This is a great forum!!! Anyway, which plan do you think would work best? I have fake plants, a small brown pebble substrate, and a black background.

Plan 1:

2 Pearl Gouramis
6 Cories
6 Black Neon Tetras
6 Rummy Nose Tetras

Plan 2:

2 Bolivian Rams
10 Cardinals
6 Cories
6 Lemon Tetras

Plan 3:

2 Flag Cichlids
1 Pearl Gourami
8 Cardinals
6 Cories

If it was my tank, I'd go with a modified Plan 2.

2 Bolivian Rams
12 Cardinal Tetras
8 Cories

How about:
2 Bolivian Rams (even 2 males will be just fine together)
10 Cardinal Tetras
3-6 of some type of loach, YoYo's, Polka Dot, Dwarf Chain, Hillstream, Queen, Zebra, Sand, etc.
Loaches are my favorite bottom feeder, so much more personality than corys, my favorite of all is the Queen Loach/Botia.
If you are stuck on Corys though, May I suggest a couple types I have found to be more personable than the others:
Trilineatus, Pepper, Sterbais, and Aggassizi- which are not so personable, but highly attractive, and stay small enough you could probably even have 8, also Pandas are wonderful, and again you could have 8 of them.
Or, if you want something different and unique, go for 2-3 Upside Down Catfish! Very, Very cool fish.
