I have nine mollies: one black, one silver, two black/silver speckled!, three beige, one black/white/yellow, and one male sailfin. They're all between six months and one year old, 1" to 2.5". I also have four mickey mouse platies (1.5". I'm thinking about trading or selling the platies, even though they're absolutely adorable and have finally started coming up to greet me when I walk by. I want bottom feeders to help with the algae and extra food, but I'm so absolutely paranoid about overstocking my 38 gal and compatibility. Any ideas as to what I should do?

A BN would be an interesting addition, would definitely help with algae, and wouldn't overstock your tank.

I can understand how you don't want to give away your platies. They are the cutest fish! I think maybe a bristle nose would be a good addition to the tank.

How about adding this:
Group of loaches as bottom feeders such as:
Queen Botia
Polka Dot Botia
YoYo Botia
Dwarf Botia
OR
4 Upside Down Catfish
then add an algae eater such as:
trio of Ottos
or
BN Pleco
or
Rubbernose Pleco

Ottos are much shinier than bristlenoses. But if you want something that will downright glow, get a clown(pleco, not loach). Then again, a nice zebra plec. would be very, very shiny indeed.
