Spiney eels really don't do a heck of a lot....I have about a dozen, and I am lucky to see much of even 3-4 on a daily basis....if his weight looks good, I would not worry about starvation. What are you offering for food?

get a wooden skewer spike a earth worm and wiggle in front of his mouth. Once he is use to this you can try holding lower on the skewer until his eating out of your hand. i have done it with a few different spineys eels and a fire eel and once they learn you bring food they become just as friendly as a oscar..trust me

the spiney eel family is a mostly nocturnal family. They do most of their hunting at night. They are often the cause of "I got a new eel, but my (small fish) have been disappearing one by one" stories. Many times the eels will still eat other food, but can't resist having a tetra-snack or two a night.

Anyway, being nocturnal, during the day they tend to find a spot (under a log or rock or some kind of cave) and just rest there. If those are not avalible, then they will burrow if possible. During the night is when they come out and are active.
