I am going to start over in my fishtank starting with new substrate.

What would be the best substrate in your opinion for bottom dwelling fishes like corys and loaches?

Fine rounded gravel would be Ok, but Sand would be excellent for Corydoras.

I agree about the sand.. It seems that cories always really enjoy their tanks when they've got sand to dig around in.. Anything smooth would work though..

Once you go sand Troy, you never look back... well I certainly haven't.
Cories adore sand (as do most fw fish) and it looks so cute when they bury their little heads so far down when they're looking for extra food .
IMHO it's much easier to keep clean as well
