My tank light is a bit iffy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I was wondeing if it matters if the tank light works. Would just plain sunlight be okay for the tank ?

do you have live plants?

if not- then the short answer is no - it doesnt matter

youd enjoy the fish more WITH light, but as long as the tank is recieving enough daylight for the fish to have a day/dark routine then theyll be fine. Several fish preffer subdued lighting.

gouramis i know preffer subdued lighting, not sure about cories- just make sure they have a day/night periods- if there is adequate light in the room, without lamps during the day- theyll be fine.

sunlight is fine if you like algae. Sunlight will make a LOT of algae in your aquarium. It is very possible, and, if done right, is strong enough to grow a planted aquarium all by itself.

Is it the light tube/bulb that "is a bit iffy" If it is the tube/bulb just replace it. If it is the unit get it checked out it could be a faulty unit and not safe to use.
