| Tank for college...20 long or 10s? how to transfer? | |

I have my lovely 29 gallon tank with it's new hood and all sitting on the floor next to me but i've come to the conclusion it's way to big to take to college and then have to move, possibly even too big for college policy. Anyway now i have a ten gallon set up for my beta and another 10 gallon tank with hood but i'de like something i could stock decently...like a centerpeice fish (gourami) or two (paradise fish) and maybe a small school of tetras (not neons) and a few bottom feeders. With what I want another 10 just for the tropicals would be too small right? Would i be able to do what I want and also be able to transfer it somehow with a 20 long? I figure I could either take the fish out or just lower the water....but i really have no experience with moving fish. I live 15 minutes from campus so it's not too bad. Thanks! |

Never move a glass tank with water, as it can burst in your hands with the water movement. It's better to put the water in a container, the fish in another container & when you move the tank, fill it up with the same water & use the same filter media. Remember to keep the filter & gravel a bit wet, so the bacteria will survive. After you've finished, gently add the fish & hopefully you're ready to enjoy them. ![]() http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

I'd go with gouramis over paradise fish because paradise fish are actually coldwater. There are many different kinds of tetras that would be psyched to go in a 10 gallon. Glowlights, cardinals, and rummynoses...the list goes on. Finally, for bottom feeders, you can go with a school of small cories. So, say: 2 dwarf gouramis 6 tetras 6 cories However, if it was me, I would put the cories and tetras into the betta tank. That way, you would have a whole 'nother tank for whatever you want. You could try your hand at african shelldwellers, or maybe do a coldwater tank with paradise fish and white cloud mountain minnows. They are very bright and tetra-like. 1 betta 6 tetras 6 cories And about the tank, I doubt a 29 would cause you any trouble. If I'm not mistaken, the rule of thumb for any kind of apartment or doorm that isn't specially fitted for a large tank is "no tanks over 55 gallons". Something like a 29 should have no problem floor-wise. However, your school could also just be very strict about this sort of thing. |

I came across a brand new flouresent hood for another ten gallon for dirt cheap so now i'm cleaning out and checking over the other ten I had laying here. Also, the place i bought the hood from also was selling aquarium stands so I have a stand for my 29...so i'm holding onto it, maybe use it next summer or something. I also like the idea of a cold tank, i didn't think of that! Thanks again! |
