Good luck with the set up tomorrow :%)!

Hi guys,

Well, I purposely stayed home this long weekend to get the upgrade going. (29g to 40g breeder planted)

I thought I was finally going to make progress today. Finally got ahold of my buddy, we carried the 40 (bought used) outside and managed to get most of the calcium buildup off it, using some Lime Away to help.. Then drained most of the 29 into my laundry hamper, putting plants into a bucket, which is now full Caught most of the fish & placed in a 2.5 gal along with the filter media for now.. Then moved the 29 off to the side and got the 40 where I wanted it.. Drove my buddy home, rushed back and was psyched to do more. Started rinsing the flourite (used) in small amounts, rinsing several times and stirring it up. (should see the crap coming out of this stuff) Didn't get much of that done when...

My landlady knocked on the door and asked if I could stop running the water until tomorrow since it woke her up and will keep her awake.
DANG DANG DANG !!! I was totally ready to just keep going and do as much as possible until I was ready to drop.
Now have to wait until the morning then continue with rinsing flourite. Meanwhile my apartment looks like it was hit by a bomb due to tank stuff everywhere.. As soon as this is done, a major clean is in order. So chaos rules my domain for now..

This is what sucks about renting an apartment if your landlord lives upstairs. It's always something huh ?
I wish I had a house

Still some baby guppys/platys, a loach and some amano shrimp and small plants in the few inches of water in my 29 too. The temp is a few degrees colder in the apt then it is in the tank.. Put the strip light over the 2.5 gal to give it some heat hopefully ! And leaving my computer and tv on all night as I know this ups the temp a couple degrees (small place)

Patience patience, more worried about the fish then anything, want to get their new home ready fast !
(and get this baby planted already)

Will have to snail dip all the plants with potassium permanganate.

Almost 2am, gotta work tomorrow and I'm wide awake darnit ! Good time for an update.

Half my plants are in and the tank is lookin full already, no structure yet, just getting them outta the bucket.. I'm going to have to have a little sale. I did split up my 2 bunches of dwarf sag into plantlets and did an area near the front. Cut my Crypt x Willisii in half, then outta one half made 8 plants ! Definately phasing out some plants in favor of lower maintenance ones.. The Hygrophila Difformis is getting phased, as well as 2 types of java ferns (keeping some babies handy though) keeping the java fern lace in the main tank.. 3 amazon swords which will outgrow this tank, will try and trade 2 for an ozelot sword. No pics yet, too unorganized in the tank and can't find the charger for the camera

Night all !

Not done yet gfg ! I made some potassium permanganate "snail dip" in a 2.5 gal.. Preparing small batches of plants to get dipped. Did 2 batches so far, and still pullin more plants out of the 29 to be dipped.

One of my crypt had a baby plant fall off, so I have another ! Also it looks like my C X Willissi has grown a 'sidekick'. I like crypts !

I traded a clown loach for an amazon sword last week, still in the rockwool.. Last night I picked the weak/damaged leaves off, and the rockwool. I discovered I have 3 swords ! I hope they do well

Planting the tank is going to take awhile.
Back to work !

how can the sound of running water being annoying? i thought it was meant to be relaxing. ....... *ponders the world of non fish people.

Dafish, yesterday i did a big clean up in my 12 G - i can't imgaine cleaning enough substrate for a forty G.

i love sand, it is so easy to look after, the 12 G has gravel and it gets so manky.

i wonder if you are done yet? as far as aquascaping goes my tanks always look rubbish compared to ones on here - i blame my pleco! he mess everything up honest.

well as soon as you are done (or maybe after a rest) photos please, i have never been able to keep rams so i shall be very jealous when you breed them!

I am hoping it will be neat, we'll see eh ? I've never considered myself much of an aquascaper.. That's not the focus here, but I'll try and make it look half decent. I'm hoping to breed german blue rams in the 40.. (have a pair of apistos in my 10 gal also) Someone is supposed to be holding 4 domestic breds for me, I think one male 3 female, and someone else pm'd me on a young male. I hope to get them next weekend, this gives me a week to make sure all is ready.

I also want to keep propagating a few plants for trade/sell on a very small scale in my local area. Have been doing this already. I've now aquired 20 something types of plants. I will have to narrow this down and see myself gravitating towards lower maintenance. Speaking of which, I can't find my other cleanup crew member, a young bn pleco. C'mon little guy !

Not sure if will raise the young in another or same tank, but have a 2.5 gal here and can free up my 5 gal hex if need be. Lets see some eggs first ! (or fish for that matter lol) I'll need the luck, never bred cichlids or egglayers before..

9:40pm
Landlady knocked awhile ago, the water running all day drove her nuts, told her was almost done. Finished topping up the tank and filled 2 extra buckets for the snail dip and rinse. Still a few juvenile platys to catch, the mopani cave and fake cave are in as well as most of the fish.. Plants to be dipped still.

OH this sounds like a project:%)I'm so glad my landlady doesn't live anywhere close to meshe'd have a fit about the water runningas I only do water changes at night (summer heat, has killed cold water and it's the only time I can be sure not to boil the fishies:%))

Keep rinsing, and scrubbing you'll be through soon (I hope for your sanity) and don't forget to take some aleve, all the bent overness and hauling scrubbing is bound to leave you a bit sore

Have fun, and can't wait to see picsheidi

Wow this sounds like it will be a neat thing when it's done What fish are you breeding? Is this set-up going to be the tank they bred in and then are raised in or is it just gonna simply be breeding, then raising in a seperate tank?...Well whatever the case, good luck

You're right I shoulda bought her some earplugs LOL !
The fish made it thru the night and the temp just right now.

Thanks for the good luck wishes

Update 2pm - rinsing flourite over and over, I am living and breathing the stuff, I'm sick of flourite ! LOL
About 60% done with that. Taking a little break to type and eat.

Upgrade costs so far. (all used)

40 gal breeder tank 36Lx18Wx14H with 2 piece glass top $50.
came with a crypt plant and an incandescent light strip for extra $10. (swapping that for my 36" flourescent strip that's on my 90 gal which just got sold finally)

At least 60 pounds of used flourite $50. (new is $136. for 30 pounds) hour and half drive round trip ($10.), guy threw in a small mounted driftwood too.
Went thru it all by hand to remove 'things'.. Very dirty requiring much washing.. This has been the most time consuming part of the project.

2 mopani driftwoods, one of them a huge cavelike piece $30. A 'brick' and piece of 'wall' $5. Traded a $17. clown loach for a one foot amazon sword plant.

Me and Crazygar mailed each other gift packages, he needed asian ambulia so I had a few plants shipped his way. He sent little bits of C balansae, C undulata, cardinal flower, and a pinch of moss (erect) which I'll have to propagate before use, then figure out which tank to put it, I think right on the mopani. You are the coolest buddy (I've been bugging Gary for at least a few months to get that moss lol) Didn't expect those crypts !

Fake wood cave given by my friend Suzy.

Back to work

Good news, the asian ambulia which I had to cut down almost to the substrate, has now stopped melting and showing new signs of growth Some cryts are a bit melted but looks like they'll all make it.. Haven't added fert sticks yet.

Ozelot red and 2 more common swords being added this weekend, 4 domestic bred german blue rams the weekend after.

Huh, I raise your three tanks in an appartment. I have 35G and 25 G and a 2.5 G in my BEDROOM.

plus a 12G downstairs which my folks "tolerate". Dad complains about the space and junk, Mum counts the baby guppies.......

my love of this hobby knows no bounds! i am a girl after all - these tanks take up vauable shoe space. I am truly suffering from MTS.

Chris, I've had MTS on and off for about 20 years.
Cheers !
DaFish

ps - 3 tanks crammed into a tiny apt ain't bad lol.
I warded off the MTS this time by changing one of my
existing tanks to a larger one. The same thing will
happen to my 10 gal apisto, getting swapped for 15g

Yup my bn's are small, they're young still. Bought 3 off a local breeder. They clean algae awesomely.

Thanks GFG hey, don't be jealous. You know you're going to get MTS (multi-tank syndrome) right?

Picture 4 on left. If it's the tall plant, thats an Amazon Sword. There's 2 more to the left, not in that photo. They will be switched for 'fancier' swords soon as I find them. If you know what those 2 stem plants are centre front, let me know !

The box thing is a Nutrafin CO2 (Hagen) worked wonders in my 29. Chipboard is quite fine under a tank. I tend not to spill right around the tank, usually, it goes on me.

Yup, take some BN pics and share with us. Hopefully outta my 3, I'll wind up with a pair lol..

I'm basically pleased with the tank, just want the plants to recover, then I'll try and aquascape this a little better. MORE plants will be added, and others phased out.

Houston you're right, this tank needs to fill in..
It'll be fun doing more to it as it develops. I went to a friends place tonight and left with 10 purple striped MTS snails.. Cool ! Time to put em in

hey that looks great will be even better when it's filled in with the growthI really am never posting pictures of my plants/planted tanks I either have a problem like with the 2.5 where the plants take over (FruitLoop, the betta is not happy right nowtime to pull out some more anacharis) or I kill them all And really don't feel bad about the melting plantsdid it with a batch of anacharis onceforgot I bought it and left it in the truck...didn't forget the fish, just the plants:%)melted mush the next day Looking great, and I'm glad you found your MIA BN, they seem to find the best places to hideheidi

i thought they looked excellent! Am very jealous of the size of your tank. i thought you said your plants weren;t any good? I shall have to do some careful editing of my photos. the java fern that is on its last legs will have to go!
in picture four, what is that the plant on the left called, cos i have that too! are you running a CO2 unit is that what that box thing is that looks like, a well it looks like a toy i had when i was kid but that won't help you. its that box thing.

its so funny looking at pictures of some one else's tank, i can see the test kit colour guide and the towel(i have a special wet arm tank towel!)just to be s total old woman, have you stood it on chipboard? is that safe? doesn't chipboard swell when its wet.... i would worry but then i worry about everything.

I too have a baby BN,i shall attempt to take some photos tonight........ if i can find him!

you must be really pleased with it after all that hard work.

GFG
