Well, my sister finally convinced my dad to let her pull up the carpeting in her room. We have lovely hardwood floors underneath, so, yay... She was able to sand down the floor one evening, then spend the next day sealing the floor. My dad got some special water based stuff that doesn't stink much, and dries quickly. She was able to put five coats on in one day. 24 hours for "light foot traffic" and 7 days for full cure. We put the furniture back (carefully) after 24 hours because she had to go back to school.

This is my concern... I'd love to rip up my carpet as well (and we'll probably wind up ripping up all the carpet in the house this summer, as well), but I've got all these aquariums in my room. (Thankfully her tank was up at school.) Is it worth it to move everything for a couple days (don't ask me WHERE I'd put them in the meantime) or do I just live with the carpet until I move out? Don't ask when that will be, considering I'm flat broke right now.

Thankfully, my biggest tank is a 20 long, so it's not like I'm trying to move a 75 gallon tank, but still... is the trouble of moving the tanks for a few days worth it? I guess my big thing is that I'd have to drain, move, resetup, then repeat the same thing a couple days later. I'd either have to move the tanks completely across the house or temporary board in my sis's bedroom (next to mine). But that's four tanks (20 long, 12, 10, 5) that need to find a temp home, not to mention the half dozen betta tanks. Oi.

I would move them.

It was very easy to move my 20 long.

Took 15 minutes MAX.

leave the carpet. that way if you spill water it doesn't really hurt anything.

Actually, the moisture can get trapped underneath the carpet and cause the wooden floor below to rot.

Wood floors are a lot easier to clean up.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Yeah... on the water spillage thing, I don't particularly want to know how much time we're going to have to spend sanding... apparently the people before us used my room as the dog room. And as I gather, they were puppy training at some point. Add to that the spills I've already made... yeah, I'm going to assume there's some stains on the floors.

I'm thinking it would make things a lot easier to clean up spills without the carpet to soak things up. And since I always manage to get SOMEthing wet when I'm near water (this includes washing dishes, cleaning fish tanks, etc), I'd think it would make things easier on me.

With five coats of varnishy stuff, I'd hope that would repel water pretty well. If worse comes to worse, I could always put some kind of mat down during waterchanges and such.

I'm excited about ripping up the stupid 20 year old carpet.. not only is it probably horribly loaded with allergens, it's just plain ugly.

Till then you can always do what I do @the office, lay down some waterproof material....we have some extra that was used @one point as a table cloth, soft fabric on the underside with a waterrepellent suface. I don't always spill but the times I do it's normally most of a 2 gallon bucket that managed to slip .
You should be able to find something like it @a fabric store for rather cheap, or even those thin plastic table cloths.
And yes...it'll be worth it . Just make sure you take precautions when moving.
