If you had only one school of say cardinals or neons...you could have about 10-12. If you wanted Rummynose tetras you could have 8-10. The bigger the tetra the less I would do. I think with most types though you could have atleast 8. |

If it is a schooling tetra you should add about 5 to the school so you have 6, and then you could add another school of 6 tetras if you wanted. |

If they stay in the tank then they should not forgotten in your equation for stocking. So there are 2 larger fish (cichlid and BN), one tetra, and 10 cories. In itself pretty solid for a 20G. I would say that adding additional fish would depend on a few side factors: What is your maintenance routine, and how often? What filtration is on the tank? Is the tank planted (real plants)? And, in general, how long ago was the tank set up and do you consider it settled? Various tetras are not doing to well in unsettled (and don’t confuse that with cycled) tanks, for example Rummy Nose, Glow Lights, and even Cardinals. Hope this helps, Ingo |

If you go with tetras you need a non-nippy tetra that wont fit in your butterflys suprizingly large mouth! Inky ![]() |
carpe_diem![]() ![]() Fish Addict *Dreamer* Posts: 555 Kudos: 292 Votes: 51 Registered: 18-Apr-2004 ![]() | yeah this is my problem! ive kept cardinals with an african butterfly before and there hasnt been a problem neons would be too small and would get eaten... the cardinals avoided the top of hte tank which helped.. they could probably sense the danger! the corys are a bit of a problem! there are actually 10 of the lil mites swimming around..i would like to keep around 6 of them but i dont know what to do with the remainders.. albino cories anyone??? the tank has been running for at least 3 years now and i do a 25% clean every fortnite. As for filtration it has both an UG (which was my original filter) and an eheim cannister filter (added later). It currently has 3 plants (im not good on plant names.. it has big leaves though) looking to add more plants this weekend as well as the butterfly fish needs more coverage. Im not really looking to upgrade as i already have a 55g running with cichlids in it.. and that keeps me busy as it is! that needs some work still it only has 3 fish in it! Would i be overstocked if i added 6 tetras... |
keithgh![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 6371 Kudos: 6918 Votes: 1542 Registered: 26-Apr-2003 ![]() | Personally I would stick to one variety of Tetras a school of Cradinals mixed with dark green leafy plants like "Anubias" or Java Fern can look very attractive. Both of these plants should be fixed to drift wood or natural rough type rocks I also would think about changing your Water cleaning as you put it. The small the tank the more care it requires. 25-30% weekly would be ideal. How often do you clean out the canister. I have a small eheim sponge filter in my Betta tank and that is cleaned every week. carpe_diem![]() ![]() Fish Addict *Dreamer* Posts: 555 Kudos: 292 Votes: 51 Registered: 18-Apr-2004 ![]() | i didnt realise it needed weekly water changes (water cleaning im having a bad day!its friday 13th after all!) ive never had any water problems doing it fortnightly.. will take note of that and start from this week! as for the filter i clean it out once a month.. is this not enough???? I think im going to go with 6 cardinals... like you said they should go well with the anubias (im learnig alot today!) :%) and safe with the butterfly fish as well! |
keithgh![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 6371 Kudos: 6918 Votes: 1542 Registered: 26-Apr-2003 ![]() | I clean my 5ft tank it has a Eheim Pro11 monthly. The Betta tank 10g the Eheim internal filter is cleaned weekly. But you must remember both of these tanks are pushed close to their limit. I have always work on prevention is better than cure. I also add I bio starter at every water change this keeps the origional good bacteria healthy.
