But they are mutants... It's the mutations in their genes that make them that way.

It's not like it took many generations to develop, for example, bubble-eye goldfish. It just so happened that a around-bodied, dorsal fin-less goldfish had a spontaneous change in its genes (most likely caused by some defect during the mitosis of the sperm/egg cell) that caused it to have fluid-filled sacs under its eyes.

Normally these mutations, i.e. the deformed, round bodies; the strange growths of tissue on the head/nostrils; no dorsal fin; paired caudal fins; would be fatal in nature, just like most other mutations. In fact, only about 0.1% of the mutations that occur in a species are even slightly beneficial.

Now I personally cannot understand what beauty people see in these intentionally handicapped goldfish, but I guess it's just a matter of personal opinion. And whether you love them or hate them, they are still at the end of the day nothing more than mutants.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

this isn't a hybred but a mutant...makes me very sad, and I'm not even a goldfish lover

What do you actually know about ranchus, that makes you think that that is a mutant? Why does it make you sad? Ranchus have been bred over hundreds of years to look that way, remember fancy goldfish were bred to be viewed from the top. It's unusual looking yes, and I'm not the most partial to dorsal-less goldies myself, but something about how you worded that makes me get my hackles up. I'm getting very tired of all the Fancy Goldfish Haters on this site

This isn't meant to be a personal attack, Doedogg, so I'm sorry if it comes across that way, but reading posts like this gets my hackles up since I love and keep fancy goldies. To each his own, right?

hybrids aren't necessarily bad.

many of the foods we eat wouldn't be available if it weren't for hybridizing, so i don't get why it's frowned upon.

I know many people who keep predatory catfish and anyone who has the tank size and space for a red tail cat hybrid, should be able to own one.

It seems criminal to me to have a 10x4x4 foot tank and only have one fish in it.

Yeah, that hybrid has actually been around for quite a while. I am told that Pims are sometimes bred as food fishes, and obviously in that case the bigger the better. Occasionally such fishes make their way into the fish trade... At least, that's how I'm told this hybrid has come about. There are also a number of other Pim hybrids, but this is undoubtedly the most popular one of them. It actually looks pretty cool, but unfortunately there are always more fishes than suitable tanks when it comes to these giants.

I don't think it would happen in nature...

Did that link have anything on if they were sterile or not? Because I'm thinking it's like the nothern pike and musky, crossbred to make a tiger musky, but the offspring is sterile, and it never happens in nature, just in labs.

I've seen them in petland. Some poor sucker is gona have a big surprise. But, hey whatever floats your boat. I don't think it's too wierd considering that the two species are related. I wouldn't be surprised if they crossbred in nature.

Ranchu goldfish... bred without dorsal fins. yet another reason I don't like fancy goldfish.

I agree the catfish looks pretty cool, but it sounds just waaay too big and expensive to keep!

not that I could see. I didn't even see pectoral fins, but maybe I was in too much shock.

They look neat if you ask me, I just wish I had a tank big enough for one.

Yes indeed ]

I still don't hold with LFS's selling regular Red tail cats or irridescent sharks, or goldfish for that matter!
