Well its kind of a trick, but it has a purpose for the fishs sake. Whenever Im actually going to feed my fish as oppose to just standing near the tank or just taking photos, I sort of do an abnormally fast wave shake of my fingers at the thank inhabitants for a couple of seconds. Its quite funny, you can see them just looking at me, trying to act casual, and then when I give the signal, they all go completely crazy and come to the front of the glass.

That way they dont have to get all overexcited whenever somone is near the tank. I primarily did it originally as a habituation thing, so that I could take photographs of individual fish without the others swarming in the way of the picture.

Basically it just leads them into having a calmer life, and Im pretty sure thats a good thing.

cool! thanks LHG, as you told me, the tricks can be forgotten later....but that one seems so cool! My pleco is weird, i put a bunch of flakes in one time, and it started to eat them while they were on the top of the water. From then on, it started to help the gouramis make their bubble nest. Weird much............

Here's a link to a video of some trained goldfish. If you want to see more just search for trained fish and there are dozens of videos.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8tkKSZ-nO0

I had at one time, many years ago, several brackish water archer fish. I really don't know who was trained, the fish or me. Anyway's I had a favorite chair at the time that I liked to sit in and read the newspaper in the evening. As soon as I would sit down and start reading the paper those crazy archer's would start squirting water out of a small opening with great accuracy, hitting both the newspaper and myself. The would continue this as long as I was in the chair reading the paper or until I got up and fed them.

One trick i learned is.......When i put my finger in the tank, the gourami touch them with their feelers, and try to eat them. I used the tank to train them. I used a wiggling finger to signal the food hand, and a nonmoving one to not. The fish just went crazy over the wiggling finger and all tried to chomp it. I released the food, and from now on, they come to that finger(takes awhile to get it through their heads.)!

Yeah, it was. And I thought my DOGS were pesty when it came to feeding time! At least they never squirted me with water.

I also like the other suggestions on here for feeding fish.

They were pretty cool fish. Probably one of my most favorite, even after 35+ years of fish keeping.

My oscar boB used to throw gravel at the glass when he wanted to eat. It was definately a case of fish training human though.
Those archers sound cool Jim!
