I went to my LFS today and could not help buying a fish. I got 1 Hillstream loach for my 20. What a cool fish. Just thought I would share that, I know I'm not the only one that goes to the LFS for one thing and walks out with a bag of stuff.

That is the problem with LFS. They sucker us fish lover in because they know we have a hard time leaving without a new fishy friend or two.

What a cool fish

Literally, a cool fish as they don't like tropical temperatures too much.

Can you tell us more about the tank that you put it in?

My problem too, went to the store just to get an extension tube for a HOB filter and lo and behold a new male betta jumped right into my cart

LITTLE_FISH. I put the hillstream loach in a 20gal tank with a school of white clouds and 1 false siamese alge eater. There is no heater at all the temp rarely hits 75-76 deg and I have a duetto 100 filter. I have small to medium sized gravel some wood a few rocks and some plants. When I put him in he went right to work on the alge, it has been 4 days and he looks like he is right at home. I just have one problem. Will he eat sinking wafers or alge wafers off the bottom of the tank. Any input would be appriciated.

lowlight,

Why don't you try it? The worst that can happen is that he doesn't eat the wafers and you would have to remove them (if the others don't eat them either) to avoid that they rotten in the tank (or the snails get to them, if you have any). If you don't have wafers at hand, just buy a small package.

The one thing that helps with wafers is to break them into smaller pieces and spread them out throughout the tank. This way the fish will come accross one more likely and if many fish like them then there will not be a crowd on just one wafer (or way too many wafers when spread out). Also, you could try to add them in the evening after lights out.

1 false siamese alge eater
Why?

I put a small piece of algae wafer in last night after lights out, I did not see it this morning. As for the false siamese algae eater, why not? I have 2 siamese algae eaters in my 55 and I don't plan on adding anymore fish to my 20.

lowlight,

That's good that the wafer is gone, let's hope the right fish got it

About "Why Not" having a False Siamese Algae Eater: Because I would be at least a little concerned about the things I hear about this fish (and no, I don't mean a chinese algae eater). In the least case they are not real algae eaters (when they get older) and, IMHO, there are more interesting fish of 5" length out there. Uh, but I might have not considered the lower temp of the tank (my mistake). Anyway, in the worst case I read that the fish is becoming quite aggressive when grown up. Did I ever have one to back this up? No.

Keep an eye on "who eats the wafer?",

I dropped a small piece of wafer in again while the lights were still on. I didn't see the loach going for it allthough the false siamese did. As of today the loach seams to be doing very well. I'm going to get some rocks and put them in my 55 to get algae on them (more algae in 55) and then put the rocks in the 20. The false siamese is only about 1 inch long and seems to like space. I don't think he bullies them, he just doesn't like them to close. Nobody bothers the hillstream loach.

lowlight,

Try to drop in a few small pieces spread out. That should increase the chance that he gets part of it.
