I have been keeping rainbows for a long time but I have had difficulties. I have no trouble with females, but males will come and breed like mad and then calm down and die. Why is this happeneing and how can it be prevented?

Quite often, temperature of the tank can have an effect on the urges of rainbows.

Can you tell us what type of rainbows, size of the tank and stocking?

That'd be the first I've ever heard of Rainbows pulling the old salmon trick.

Um, but that does make me wonder.

How do you know they're spawning?

The males do not die after they breed, like the salmon. There has to be another reason. I have been breeding rainbows for several years now, and never seen that happen.

It happened again. I had 1 female turquoise, a female boesmans and another female( the name has slipped me for the moment. They are fine. I added a two inch male turquoise and was very happy and changing colours a lot and he would court the female. A few days ago I noticed him swimming in the top corner of the tank, all black. The next day he died. He was the first fish to die in that tank for a while.

This bothers me because he was the only fish to die and the three other rainbows act like nothing happened. Whats wrong the ratio? the setup? filtration? If I can't find the problem, I will give them up and go for Congos.

I think I found the problem. My water conditions were way out and the rainbows I have managed to adapt to the conditions. I will try to keep them once I have stabilized the water.
