well the point is that these fishes are real. makes one's mind think: what else is down there. i doubt that a tsunami would drive these deep water fishes to land. i would thought like to see a live giant squid, but that will come in time.

In my experience, red lobster is overrated.

Thanks Calilasseia... such a beautiful creature. Nothing moves with such elegance in the water. And speed when they want to... wow... so fast. Looking at that link, my 6' Manta was only a wee nipper!

I use to dive quite a bit, and you'd be amazed what you'll see even in shallower waters. My most amazing experience was meeting a 6ft wide Manta Ray while diving with my Grandfather. The Manta was living in a bay 20m from my grandfathers house, about 10m out from the shore. Incredible creature... amazing to watch. It caused one visiting diver to have a heart attack. Only the locals knew the Manta was there, and they made a point not to tell anyone else... just to keep it safe! So when the visitor caught a glance, not expecting it...

My grandfather gets to live in an amazing place... lucky guy. I've also sat just off some rock pools 50m from his house, watching a pod of dolphins feed on schooling fish for hours. I sat there with my GF, and watch tourists wander around the rock pools, and not even notice the dolphins... some people are just blind Well, atleast we got the show to ourselves!!

I happen to run into this and thought it was very interesting. These are pics of deep water fish that were brought ashore during the tsunami.

I still think it's cool that in the 21st century, we're still finding new species of fish that have been around probably longer than humans. When you think about it, there's still probably thousands of undocumented lifeforms under the ocean that we will probably never find. Nature fascinates me.

Among the deep sea oddities, one of my favourites is Chiasmodon, the Black Swallower.

Because fish are widely spaced apart in the abyssal depths compared to fishes in shallower waters, meal opportunities tend to be somewhat rarer. So, the fishes that live at these depths (below 1,000 metres) have to take whatever comes their way. The Black Swallower is an extreme example of the phenomenon: it has evolved extremely flexible mouthparts and an elastic stomach, so that it can actually swallow a fish twice its own size.

Here is a nice page featuring this fish ...
