I was wondering, why fish such as Red tailed balck sharks and rainbow sharks and fish that do not toloerate their own kind, are always in tanks together gettin on fine at LFS's. E.g. I was picking up some supplies the other day and I saw a whole tank of Red Tailed Black sharks gettin on fine. So why donn't they in home aquariums. ?!? :%)

Reason I was given is that they're too stressed in a LFS environment to take the time to fight with each other.
I've never been quite satisfied by that response however .

Because there are SOOOOOO many in there- the aggression is evened out among them, and there isnt room for any to establish a territory, and they are there for such a short time, and the tanks are overstocked.

Same rule as for cichlids I do believe, in the LFS they have nothing to mark territories by, and the increased movement of so many in smaller tanks there for their aggressive tendencies are less.
A few things i've heard.......

It is because they have no place to have their territory since there are millions in the tank.

There was 3 RTBS in the tank at my LFS, and they were fighting, when they wernt fighting a week ago with around 25 in the tank.

Many fish stores put sedatives in the aquarium water after the arrival of a fish that causes them be all but unresponsive for a time after their arrival. Also if you were scared to death would you be concerned with anyone else.

They're young, and overcrowded.

Yes, I thought it was for a variety of reasons...many already mentioned here. Young (not yet mature enough to show territoral preference), stress, transport shock, unfamilar surroundings, overcrowding, etc.

I feel sorry for so many of them as the majority I've seen are kept in inappropriate conditions.
