My son recently talked me into purchasing a "walking eel". We have it in the 55gl with our angels. It is about 3" long. Does anyone have any info on these???

Could it be a lungfish??? In which case your tank would be to small.

Perhaps a mudskipper? They look somewhat like short eels.

what ever it is, chances are that it will out grow ur tank, there are many lfs common fishes, that it could be sold under, birchi/BGK/knives/dragon fishes/ all kind of eels, loaches, etc. a better description and a pic would be helpful, in figureing out this fish.

I looked @ the site of the lungfish. It is not one of these. It looks like an eel, but with fins towards the front gills and a spiny fin running down his back.

Any chance of a photo there?

Where abouts did you buy it?

I have an image in my head of something just under 1' long, but i can't put a name to it...

It sounds alot like a birchir. Or maybe a snakehead? I'd look up both.

i cant imagine, a snakehead, being sold under that, or being sold in general, but if the dorsal is on the top, i think it rules out knife fishes, my closest guess is a birchi, a photo, would be great.

Bettachris is right! I looked at the site he provided and it is a Bichir. Thanks guys. I am going back to the site to read up on him. My 7yr old son talked me into purchasing the "walking eel" from Petsmart. I know he will outgrow the 55gl, but for now he is very small.

anyway yes it will out grow that tank by a long shot, so maybe a 100+ will do well.

He MAY outgrow a 55 gallon...there are numerous bichir species which range from 10"-42"+ when mature. The trick will be dertermining what species your shop has. Can you describe colour/pattern, and number of dorsal finlets?

His color is an ashy gray. Right now he is about 3" long and can wolf down the shrimp pellets, so I am assuming he is not going to stay small too long. Will look @ the fin this evening.

Sounds like you probably have Polypterus senegalus senegalus, the Senegal bichir.
