At the moment Australia is is in a very bad drought and they are warning that many old and new houses are all ready cracking (moving)

For this reason alone you should have a good styrene foam thickness under your tank.

I have a 20mm under my 5ft tank.

Isnt it at level 2 or 3? Does this mean we cannot change fish tank water? It seems Sydney still get the usual rain.

I am refering to house movement not the water restrictions.
House movements can cause larger tanks to crack if not suported correctly.

I have 10mm under my 3ft/120L tank since it came with the stand that I bought for it.
I'm getting a new 2ft/50L tank this weekend and was planning to just put it on top of a steel-frame console table that I have. Do you reckon I'll be better off getting a proper aquarium stand (with styrofoam) for it?
We're still under level 1 water restriction here in Brissie, and our house is pretty new so I haven't seen any cracking (yet...fingers crossed!).

Most shops sell ,1" thick. TRY to get 1" styro. its far more effective for this type of work.

In addition.

Chlorine/chloramine in the water appears to be 3 x the normal amount (or at least it takes 3 x the normal amount of dechlor before i can no longer smell it)

please sniff your water.

Keep in mind as the water level drops we are going to be getting to the scungy part of a dam that probably has little to no water movement. This ain't the good stuff ladies and gents.
If you are having unexplained outbreaks of illness or general lethargy after a water change, this could be part of the reason.

Keep your water changes small and regular and consider changing 1 tank per day if you have many tanks, just in case the day you choose to clean your tanks is the day that Sydney Water do something annoying with the supply.

I re-use all of my removed tank water on the garden. In a week, i can do all of the pot plants and 2 * beds as well as giving my fish tanks a good clean!

As far as i know, no where in Aus has water restrictions to the point they monitor your meter for excessive usage. So, what ever you do inside the house will not be noticed by the water authority/neighbours... so less likely to be an issue with changing water in fish tanks.

So far i'm lucky, though. My water doesn't taste, and we haven't been placed on water restrictions in the past 2 years. Sydney water and down to canberra, ulladulla Batemans Bay (etc.)... must be in a bad way, as the water really stinks and tastes as well.
