Hi,
Welcome to FP!
There seems to be two popular ways of doing a water change.
One group keeps several gallons in a container, sometimes
with an airstone, and pumps this aged water (24 hrs or more)
into the tank.

Another group, such as myself, simply allows the tap water
to run for a few minutes to "flush" any standing water out
of the pipes, and then with a hose or Python type product
simply runs the water into the tank adding any dechlorinator
as necessary.

The "ban" on using hot water, is left over from dozens of
years ago when hotwater heaters were bult around tanks
that could leach chemicals such as lead or galvanizing
metals into the tank. Such is no longer the case in
"todays" modern hot water heaters.

THE MAIN thing to do is to match the temperatures of the
water in the hose to that of the tank it is going into.
You can do this with the front of your wrist as if you
were testing a babies bottle. When the water "feels"
about the same, it is safe to put it into the tank.

A large shift in temperature stresses the fish, weakening
their immune systems and can open the way for infection
or make them hosts for parasites such as Ich.

Personally, I just match the temps and pour it in.

Frank

Hi,
While I was typing my reply "Weekend" was also typing one.

Your reply to Weekend frightened me...
Do NOT put hot water from a tea kettle into the tank.
That stream of hot water can injure the fish, and if the
temperature difference is enough, it will crack the tank
glass.

Get a hose, or a Python syphon system, and use it for water
changes and fills.

Frank

Just try to fill your tank with the closest possible temperature. It's better not to have a huge drop in temperature & try to change 25% every 4 days instead of 50% weekly.

how water comes from the same place cold water does, it just gets heated up.

WHoever told you you shouldnt use hot water from the tap is just telling you to kill your fish.

Yep that's fine, you just want it to match the temp from the tank. It really isnt a good idea to use water hot from the tap for the same reason you dont normally cook or drink with it...it picks up more of the minerals when it's hot and then transfers them to the tank.
Some people swear by using water hot from the tap. All I can say is that after years of fishkeeping when I tried it for two water changes I suddenly ended up with dead fish.

here in OZ i can't just leave the tap water to stand to remove the clorine because there is cloramine as well in the water supply wich won't evaporate sor i use stresscoat and i have a small 40l or 10gal tank on a stand about one foot above the main tank and the conditioned water is left in that tank for 24 hours and during that time i have an external open box filter backed with caron and i replace the corbon fornightly as for tempriture during the 24H the temp. will gradualy become the same as the room temp. as the main tank is temperet so after 24H the water is at the righ temp. then the water is siphined strait into the aqurium.

Babel, your fish probably died from NOT being used to the minerals.

My dad has been cahnging the water in his tank for the 20+ years he has had fish from the tap (hot) and has never had fish die from it.
