Hello All,

Just a minute ago I pulled out of myh tank a weird worm. It was .75 - 1" long and 2 - 3 times the diameter of a bloodworm. It was brownish-grey and had what looked like a 'head' end and a 'tail' end.

About a week ago I saw one of my adult Panda Corys gleefully eating something like this.

Any idea what these worms could be? Are they any danger to my tank or should I be happy that my tank is now hatching good live food for my fish? The only live food I've fed my fish are brine shrimp, I do feed them frozen bollodworms.

Any advice on this would be very welcome

Thanks

Eric

One thing I didn't notice on that site is leeches. These are actually fairly common aquarium invaders. I think we'd need more description on the worms to completely identify them.

Sounds like a leach to me.

Hmmm....leeches? As I recall the end that appeared to be a 'head' was darker (almost black) than the rest of the dark greyish body.

If it was a leech is there any danger to my tank? Or, are they just a source of a tasty snack for my fish?

I do get Panda Cory fry from time to time.

Thanks

Eric

Last night I pulled a weird little thing out of my planted tank.......it was cream colored, 1/2 inch long, fat at one end and thin at the other. It kind of creaped me out. Kind of looked like a slug without the head and antena things.

Sounds like leeches. Can you see what type of mouth it has? That helps tell you how dangerous they are. Some will attack and kill fish. I used seachem's cupramine. It's one of the safest forms of copper for fish and won't absorb into the substrate or decorations so it can easily be removed with chemical filtration. It will kill any inverts you have in the tank unless you remove them during treatment and they recommend leaving it in the tank for 2weeks. Definitely remove any carbon or other chemical filtration because it will quickly eliminate cupramine. So far it works wonders and in 4days the leeches along with some other little bugs have dissapeared. I'm going to test it's safety by adding some ghost shrimp after I've run chemical filtration for a few days.
