My family members have been hinting that they're all chipping in to buy me a new tank for Christmas, and I'm pretty sure I want to make it a West African Biotype.

Fish I definitely want are an African butterfly fish, an elephant nose, and congo tetras. What other West African fish would be compatable?

Also, what size tank would be best? Since this is still in the veryyy early planning stages, no part of the setup is definite and I'd rather just get it all perfect from the start so I don't end up having to upgrade things later :-)

well this probably wont fit in, but if u are going for a brown stained water, with thoses fishes, blind cave tetras would look nice in that kind of set-up.

The bigger the better:88) begin with 100-125 gallons, then you have lots of play room by western africa I don't suppose you are aiming for the cichlids I kept/keep...so no ideas that way, also with the larger tank go with a couple of canister filters, they do a wonderful job, and yes they are more expensive, but well worth it

Not too many other West African fish to choose from. Other fish I can think of are the African Knifefish as well as perhaps Synodontis catfish. In terms of cichlids, Kribs and Blockhead Cichlids come from the West African/Congo areas. Of course, there are many other types of fish from the area, but bichirs, electric catfishes, and large puffers are not exactly good community fish.

Most non-run-of-the-mill West Africans are rare and pricey. I'd suggest you try some of the smaller riverine tilapia, stenos (blockheads), african glasscats, syn nigrita/angelicus/flavitaeniatus/schoudenti (or any other common congo locale syno, if I missed any).

A Microctenopoma congicum would be nice. Unlike the more predatory Climbing Perches/Bushfish (genus Ctenopoma), these fish are great additions to community tanks and will eat any food given to them.
