| West African Biotype | |
Satinandtat![]() Hobbyist Posts: 54 Votes: 0 Registered: 11-Aug-2005 | My family members have been hinting that they're all chipping in to buy me a new tank for Christmas, and I'm pretty sure I want to make it a West African Biotype. Fish I definitely want are an African butterfly fish, an elephant nose, and congo tetras. What other West African fish would be compatable? Also, what size tank would be best? Since this is still in the veryyy early planning stages, no part of the setup is definite and I'd rather just get it all perfect from the start so I don't end up having to upgrade things later :-) |

Other fish I can think of are the African Knifefish as well as perhaps Synodontis catfish. In terms of cichlids, Kribs and Blockhead Cichlids come from the West African/Congo areas. Of course, there are many other types of fish from the area, but bichirs, electric catfishes, and large puffers are not exactly good community fish. ![]() -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |

I'd suggest you try some of the smaller riverine tilapia, stenos (blockheads), african glasscats, syn nigrita/angelicus/flavitaeniatus/schoudenti (or any other common congo locale syno, if I missed any). |

Unlike the more predatory Climbing Perches/Bushfish (genus Ctenopoma), these fish are great additions to community tanks and will eat any food given to them.
