I try to keep them around 78, and for the most part they do stay there.

I have to vote other as well. My tanks range from 64F to 84F. And about 85% between 74-78F. Only tanks 80F or above are the discus and some other CA fish that need it. Very few fish require temps above 76F to live and thrive. The only tanks I have above 76F are those of breeders that require it. I have several Tangs breeding at 76F.

If the higher temps are not needed, then they should not be used. Higher than needed temps can cause several problems, and some not so bad problems;

As it just causes an increase in water level drops. As it increases the evaporation of the water, especially if there is high surface movement/aggitation.

The higher temps also increase the need for food and feedings. As fish are cold blooded, and their metabolism rate is based on the temp of their environment. So an increase in just one or a few degrees can increase the food requirements more.

This increased metabolism and increased feedings, also cause an increase in waste, and thus an increase in the nitrogen cycle. As well, it increases the bacterial growth rate and life span of the nitrogen cycle bacteria, so they too increase the waste production from their own die off. So more water changes are required.

Also, it shortens the lifespan of the fish. As the fishes metabolism is increased and kept at the higher level, the fish grows faster, matures faster, and grows old faster.

If you are wanting to know what temp to keep your fish at, research them all, and see what temps are their natural environment. Then keep the temp at somewhere in the range that all your fish's natural environments are from.

EDIT:
On a side note; Too high temp will kill much quicker than too low temp. Take two fish from a natural temp of 76F. place on at 60F. It will live for weeks, months, maybe even years at that temp (most likely years). Now place the other fish at 90F. It will die in days, and depending on the fish, may die in 24 hours. That is a fluctuating temp of just 15 degrees F in both directions. Take half that, and we can assume still some damage from too high.

I'll have to vote other...

Though I have 4 tanks now in the apartmentthey are all at different temps, even with heaters

55 Cichlid tank is at 80 (can't get the thermometer to go any cooler, I think it is a goofy one at that)

29 Guppy + 2 Neon Tetra tank is about 72.

20 guppy fry tank is at 76 for now.

2.5 gallon Betta tank is about 78.

10 gallon guppy tank at school is at 75.

They all have heaters, but I've given up doing anymore adjusting due to the fact each time I adjust the heater goes bizark and shoots way to high, or drops way too low...Heidi

Main commuinity aquarium is at that temperature as a happy medium for the Characins and the Pandas. The breeding aquarium as at 22°C.

I keep mine at 26 unless I am trying to get my fish to spawn then I drop it down to 22 for a day or so.

Kept at a nice, balmy 70 degrees F.

It's a white cloud and hillstream loach river tank.

I try and keep mine at about 76 degrees but my house temp fluctuates so much that it's normally alot warmer in the tank.
