Bettas could live in small places I know but they would probably aprecciate a bigger tank! It would probably work though and if you get one get one in a cool color combo!

And, Toirtis, I should imagine a nanoreef that size would take serious skill to keep running as well. That would be a real headache for anyone other than a veteran reef keeper to even attempt.

A friend of mine has...its pretty funky, but he put about 8 months of planning/engineering into it and around $250-$300 to accomplish.

Well, since it was brought up... [link=Here]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/General%20Freshwater/55574.html?200503031733" style="COLOR: #C0C0FF[/link] is the link that djtj was talking about.

If you can find a heater, I'd recommend that, actually. I know incandescent lights can heat up the water, but then you have to worry about the fluctuation of the temp from when the lights are on during the day and off at night. Lights out will obviously cause the temp to drop... if it's a big enough drop, it could cause stress or disease, namely ich. That's why I prefer to have heaters... the heaters don't work much during the day because of the heat generated from the light fixture, but it will keep the temperature even at night.

A betta would feel at home in a 2.5. Even if there is not heater or light, you might be able to keep the tank on a desk or table where he would get light from room lamps. I would put the tank in a room that is usually occupied, so that the lights would be on more often. I had a betta tank under a lamp and it worked out great.

If you find a light for that tank, you might not need a heater. You could buy and incandescent bulb that will give off enough heat to warm the tank.

If you an heat the tank, then you could buy 3 ADFs and a small snail as tankmates for your betta. This will only work out if the betta is peaceful. If in doubt, you might want to go with a female. They are more peaceful as a whole. This may seem a bit overcrowded, but if you keep up with the water changes, then it will work out for years, as mine did.

BTW, Kitten has an excelent topic that might help you. Best of luck, Tom.

Unfortunately, zebra danios are also very active. Being hardy, they could take it, but then again, a betta can live in a soup can. Zebra danios, in my opinion, really need at least 10 gallons of space to roam. I had a school of 8 leopard danios for a while in a 55g, and they zoomed the whole length of it all day long. There are other fish much better suited for this tank

Really the only thing that I would put in a 2.5 gallon tank is a betta, and they will love the size--hml

A pair or trio of small killies, a betta, 3-5 white clouds......you can even do a nanoreef in a 2.5, but that would require a fair bit of additional equipment.

Yep, you could easily put a trio of male Endler's in there, and probably more if you plant the tank.

I wouldn't put white clouds in anything less than 10 gallon. I have them and they are so active and roam all about the 20 long.

Here is a heater that can be used for betta tanks. It is new and will only raise temps a 4-5 degrees. But, if the temperature of your house goes down to 60 degrees, it's not going to help, get it to a minimal 70F.

Here it is:

What kind of filter would you use? Some filters are easy to catch betta fins in. I have gone to an old fashioned UGF, which came as part of the 2.5 gallon mini-bow system. It creates little current and no chance of a betta getting a fin caught in the intake.

I have not seen UGF's that go that small separately. I've seen them go as small as 5 gallon.

Here's the system I just bought for one of my bettas:

Well I have a 2.5 gallon mini bow atm, and my set up looked something like this:

-1 double tail betta
-1 ADF (African Dwarf Frog)
-3-5 Ghost Shrimp

It was pretty nice; I think I had a 50 watt visitherm heater in there though.

The heating pads that Cali is talking about...I use them for my snake tank, but I never thought of using one for a fish tank...not sure how well that'd work...

You could arguably do a dwarf puffer in that tank as well.

One possible solution (but, I emphasise, only possible because I haven't tried it and I don't know anyone who has to date) is this. An underfloor heating pad. Of the kind used for reptile vivaria and spider homes. It's even possible that some of the aquarium heater companies make a piece of equipment of this sort specially for the purpose of keeping a Betta bowl warm. I'd check the manufacturers' webpages thoroughly and see if they do. This could solve your Betta mini-tank heating problem.

However, if you can get a bigger aquarium for your Betta, so that you can fit a conventional sized heater in there, this would be better (pardon the unintentional pun there!). First, your Betta would have more space. Second, water quality management would be a LOT easier in a larger volume. Third, you could (with the appropriate careful planning) put some females in there and get breeding.

The tank hasn't got a heater or a light. And I don't know if I can get 1. Also I know that they can live at room temperature in tanks, but what about when I go on Holiday, and the heating gets turned off ?
