Not sure as it's more a preference as the ease, but I'm still running on what came in my canisters I think that includes, sponge, charcoal, ceramic looking pieces, and some other stuff I believeLike I said it's the ease of not replacing it yetWhen it's time to change it, I don't know, probably whatever it came with....heidi

Mines still fairly new (10 days) so i still have the noodles, charcoal and filter mat that came with the filter.

there wasnt much that came with it so i bought some more noodles to use when i throw out the charcoal (i dont usually use charcoal) and sheet filter wool so i could cut my own filter mats. i also have shell grit in there to buffer the water coz i keep african cichlids.

When I had a cannister setup I used ceramic noodles, sponge and floss.

It came with a free carbon baggie, I didn't replace it once it wasn't active. Once the carbon was no longer doing anything I just ran with combo of ceramic noodles, sponge and floss.

those ceramic looking peices are the biolagical filtration part for those of you who didnt know..

just trying to get a general idea (i am about to attempt to build my own wetdry with all the canister filtration also

as to where when the water comes in it falls through the canister then through the bio balls into the sump where it gets pumped back into the tank
