Umbras aren't pikes (Esocidae), though they hail from the same order. Besides, it doesn't look like any mudpuppy (Umbrids, not the salamander) I know, or any pike for that matter---note the absence of a forked tail. It probably isn't an American species, as I'm fairly good with natives of N.A., though I'll probably eat those words in the foreseeable future.

EDIT: damn grammar

It does look like something from Esocidae, but it's not Umbra limi. Umbra limi always has a spot at the base of the tail. (plus this fish looks bigger than Umbra limi gets)

Only Killifish I can find that even remotely resembles it in shape are the Top Minnows of the Genus Fundulus, and the tail is the wrong shape (the Killies have rounded tails). Furthermore, Fundulus chrysotus is a bright golden-yellow fish, while Fundulus olivaceus has a large black stripe that is absent in the query fish.

Additionally, most Kilies have a longer anal fin, have tail shapes that differ markedly from this fish, and the only Killies I can find whose dorsals are as far back on the body as this are the Rivulus, which again have rounded tails and a longer anal. Even the unusual and rare Killies such as Chriopeops goodei and the Aphanius species don't fit the bill. I did toy briefly with the idea that it might be a Nothobranchius, but that idea doesn't yield fruit either.

Likewise, after an exhaustive trawl of the Erythrinids earlier in the day, I've ruled those out.

This looks like a candidate for C_o_L's "guess this fish" game. It's taken me several hours' searching yet again to draw a blank.

Umbra limi, I believe.

Looking further at the pictures it most likely isn't the fish in question, but I was just tyring to "think outside the box" a bit, since the fish in question seems so unusual...

That fish you just posted looks like an Erythrinid to me. Possibly one of the Hoplias Genus. Which differ in some respects from the first image posted. However, as I haven't encountered all of the Erythrinids, just the more commonly imported ones, I suppose it would be worth checking up to see if the fish in question IS an Erythrinid. But the dorsal on Erythrinids is usually more centrally located.

Got a taxonomic name for your fish Nowhere?

I agree with Calli, it's body shape looks very much like something in the pike family... however, I looked around and saw this... maybe there's some relation?

Looks as if it ought to be a species of Pike (Genus Esox), but the snout is shorter than the typical European or American Pike. Nearest I could find in terms of body colouration was the Chain Pickerel, but the head structure of that fish differs from the above illustration. If there are tropical analogues to the Genus Esox other than the assorted Pike Characins, one of these might fit the bill. It definitely isn't Characoid because it lacks an adipose, and the dorsal and anal fins are both located much more posteriorly than in any Characoid I've ever seen, including the Pike Characins. Plus, Boulengerella Pike Characins are much more needle-fish shaped, and less chunky and muscular than this.

Hmm. This one will keep me scratching my head almost as much as C_o_L's puzzle fishes
