I have seen a white fungus on DW if that is what you are refering to. A photo would certaintly help here. Ive had the odd sheet of it turn up on drip tray under the lights,- sometimes it happens after a patch of algae is dislodged from one location, drifted, not found a new location to its liking and died off. Sometimes the combination of putting fresh tetra blackwater extract and florapride in the water causes the odd patches of algae to die off. Often it still looks like its growing but isnt, its usually a bit sticky and will adhere to rocks ,plants, wood etc and i does look like its growing there- but it never grows and eventually breaks up or is eaten. In tanks the size of mine i dont really have to bother removing it and can just let it get broken up and the filter sucks it up, but folks with smaller tanks may wish to remove it as it will just put the nitrate up as it decomposes. If your getting fluffy stuff instead of sheets its probably fungi, and it may indicate health problems for your tank, like the presence of protiens in the water, and lack of flow or an eddy in that area, sometimes low oxygenation can be the cause- and those who feed live insects will find that cricket corpses in particular can cause fluffy fungus to sprout in a few hours .Bugs do seem to have that effect far more so than usual fishfoods, possibly as protiens from the gut decompose quickly and moths getting into the tank can cause it. Aquariums and suicidal moths do seem to go hand in hand. Last edited by longhairedgit at 04-Sep-2005 00:02 |

When the house had a moth infestation there was none in the fish room and no bodies in the tanks. The congo tetras thought they were a great treat and that's when they first started spawning for me. Sometimes a harmless fungus will grow on driftwood and then die off when it uses up it's food source. On the glass it could be dead algae, bacteria buildup, or other organisms. When cycling my tanks after moving all of them had a bit of white somewhat fluffy buildup on the glass that went away once cycled. |
