I just bought a Bella Palm for my tank, and in the hours since I planted it, my fish have been at it non stop. The platies have pretty much shredded the leaves, the cories are munching away at the stalks and my bristlenose is working his way around it.

Absolutely unbelieveable! It's got to be the fish equivalent of a honey pot! The are loving it

While I'm happy that my fish are enjoying it, I had actually bought this one more for decoration....

Hmmm, looks very similar to a terrestrial palm, any chance you have a scientific name? I'm not sure if fish can be poisoned by terrestrial plants, but the plants themselves won't grow underwater.
I could be wrong on this of course :%) in which case, congrats.

glad to hear your fish are enjoying the plant, gromit

I'm also interested in learning its scientific name and finding out if it's a true aquatic plant. An underwater palm sounds lovely!

I certainly hope it's non-toxic... I am (hopefully correctly) assuming that if the LFS sells it, that it is non-toxic. I'll see if they know the scientific name and post if.

It (did) look quite nice. A friend has one in with her Betta & White Cloud Mountain Minnows and they show no interest in it at all, so I guess some like it more than others.

bettas and wcmm's are carnivorous, whereas your tank is full of omnivores, by the sound of things...i doubt the palm is an underwater species - the only palms i've seen in petshops have been small terrestrials sold as aquatics. many petshops sell plants that will survive submerged for a while. a shame, because people then wonder why they aren't growing, or dying so quickly..

Scientific name is chamaedorea elegans and after some research it appears that although it is often sold as an underwater plant, it isn't a true one (sigh).

Oh well, my guys loved the feed.

oooh it's a parlour palm Thanks for the info, gromit. I've had lots of these over the years but never considered putting one in my tank.

It seems to survive well enough (depending on the type of fish you have!) and does look quite good in the tank - if it doesn't get totally munched!

It's probably just as well they ate it !

It's not an aquatic plant. And like all non aquatic plants if you put it in your tank it will look fine for a few weeks and then begin to rot and foul up your water.

Your fish will be expecting Waldorf Salad all the time now
