Yippeee!!! Cichlids, here I come! Watch out guys...many questions on the horizon![img src='/images/forums/halo.gif' border=0]

Goodluck with the old tank & really looking forward to help you with the new one. As you probably already know, you can ask any questions & they are always answered as soon as possible.

Congrats! Any thoughts on what type of cichlid setup you want to do?

Grrr,

All I asked for was a 55g African Lake Cichlid Setup and I didn't get it

And you got a 110G, how I envy you .

How about creating a nice log where you show us the whole setup process?

I only wanted a new 20l to setup another shellie tank.

I'm on the assistance-end this year...I gave my son a 20g, my step-daughters got a 10g, and my best friend a 30g.

Seems this is not only addictive but contagious as well

Thanks guys. Santa grimaced a little at the price tag (which isn't finished yet, of course....is it ever?), but he knew I'd been wanting this for YEARS! Little Fish...never thought about the log, but maybe I'll give it a go...perspective from someone totally new to Cichlids???
Haven't decided completely which ones yet...my well water seems perfect for Lake Victoria's...(hard to very hard and PH of 7.8), but wouldn't take much to raise PH a bit for other types. Trouble is, I like 'em all! All I know is...I don't want them to kill each other off (hubby would have a fit if I had to keep replacing the fish!) and I want lots of color! Basically, I want my tank to look like one of the display tanks at Big Al's (...too much to ask for????). When I asked what was in the tank, they said "mixed africans"...duh-uh, thanks! I think I'm leaning the most towards the 75 gallon cookie cutter set up for haps, although I think I could add a few more since its a 110. Anyway, it'll be a while before I get the fish. On a sidenote...is it feasable to cram my current fish into a 10 gallon for just a few days till I can take them in for trade in? I've got...
3 immature platys (~ 3/4"
8 Harl. Rasbora
1 Neon Dwarf Rainbow
2 Black Tetra and 1 unknown tetra type, same size as blacks
1 cory (currently being treated for fungus infection)
1 otto
I know they could never be KEPT in these conditions, but would they be okay for 3-4 days?

First off, provided you're not going to leave those other fish in there for more than 3-4 days, and you change a decent percentage of the water every day, I think they'll survive.

If you're going with Lake Victoria Cichlids, then there's some beauties you can pick up. One I saw at Chester Zoo has all-black males with red dorsal edges. Unfortunately I can't find an image on www.cichlidae.com for this beast, but this fish looks suspiciously like the one I saw - it's listed on the page as Haplochromis nubilius

This gallery of photos should give you some ideas about Lake Victoria Haps.

Congratulations on your 110 gallon setup, and if you DO get Haplochromis nubilus or whatever the black Hap really is, post pics!

EDIT : The Cichlid Room has it listed as Astatotilapia nubila. Here is a pic.

Cali, Haplochromis is the old genus name, and the new genus name is the Astatotilapia. The genus was changed to separate them from the Malawian Haps.

Those fish are out there, but rare to find. I had a nice colony about 15 or so years ago. I have not been able to find many others in the US that are breeding them. Those are probably the most pugnatious of all Victorians. Males are highly agressive towards females. With these guys, holding females must be removed.

I know the Columbus Zoo (Columbus, OH, USA) has a nice colony, and they also have the largest number of colonies of Victorian species cichlids in the world. but you will never get any fish from them. The care taker there does not believe in people keeping fish in home aquariums. So they feed the extra fry as feeder fish to the other fish there.

Oh yes, that's a much better fate. Didn't you know that??

yes, I have seen a couple of his talks, and he says it is cruel to keep fish in aquariums, unless you are like they are with their multi thousand gal tanks. I can't say on here what I really think of him, lol. But he does know his stuff when it comes to fish.

Thanks for the info guys. Great fish pics James...and nice tank set ups.

Would love to have some of those black/red fin haps. They would look stunning! But I fear it won't happen. I haven't yet really looked into where to get fish other than my LFS (a lot of the on-line places in the states won't ship to Canada), but I suspect that getting some of the rarer types might be difficult. But I'll let you know what I get!

If you do get some stunning Lake Victoria Cichlids, keep us posted, and post some pics ... ESPECIALLY if you DO manage to get those black nubila Haps, because they truly are something special ...
