in my tank i have 2 Red bellied piranhas and 3 accidental red bellied pacus. i have been meaning to take the pacus back to the shop and go and get some piranhas but i just havent had the time lately. plus they have made a really good shoal with no signs of aggression. and to be honest i've grown quite attached to them. my question is will the piranhas eat the pacus, and can they tell that the pacus arent piranhas. because they all swim around the tank together.

I don't know if they will eat each other or not...but I will vouch for the fact that the pacus will grow extremely large, and will surely outgrow the tank...the couple i've seen grown easily occupy a 125 by themselves...just what i know...hml

Well, pacu are Serrasalmins (and thus kin to silver dollars, pirambebas, and true piranhas). Some species' piranha-like coloration may, in truth, be a form of protective mimicry; juvenile pacu occasionally school with red-bellies in the wild. As for the risk of predation, I feel the possibility of any injuries more severe than minor nipping to be no greater than if your pacu were indeed fellow piranha.

A shoal of adult pacu would likely require a tank on the order of several thousand gallons. I urge you to take them back to the store.
