Guys,

Impatience may have got the better of me, i hope not.

Been out put some Tropical hardwood in tank.

Instructions

Pre-soaking overnight may avoid discolouration; Aquarium Yellowing can be remove with TAP aqua carbon. I was assured by LFS, wash it and it will be OK to put in tank straight away. I am not so sure.

Went out, everything fine.
Come back, water has a yellow tinge, Redtailed Black shark seems OK, but colouration has changed from brillant black with red tail to no so black with redish tail.

Help

It's just talons. Don't worry about it, but if you don't like the colour of your water, remove the driftwood and soak it. Maybe 2-3 days, then change the soaking water and watch it again for a day. Your filter will slowly remove most of the colour once the driftwood is removed.

If the driftwood was dry (i.e. not stored in a tank at the LFS), then it will def. need the longer soak.

The yellow color is harmless to fish. It can lower ph though. Many fish come from water with this tannic acid. It's actually more natural for alot of fish we keep and some companies sell very concentrated tannic acid called black water. To get rid of it do water changes and run activated carbon. If you don't want your tank yellow at all then soak the driftwood in a bucket for awhile changing the water every day or 2. Eventually the wood will stop giving off the color and can be put in the tank. Boiling can speed up the process but isn't necessary.

Ok thanks,

I was really panicking before replies turned up.

In my haste I removed said wood and did a 10% water change. My little mate is swimming around alot, hope i havent upset her. soaked wood in boiling water, changing every 10 mins (excessive probably). Alot of yellow coming out, will take advice and continue this for next couple of days while not at work. this is all new to me but i want to do it right. I have already got attched to my little RTB shark....torpedo. dont want to loose him !!!!!!

If you boil it too much the wood will break down. You have to have patience. Get a bucket or storage container. Fill it with water and leave it for awhile. Sometimes wood takes months to sink and sometimes it takes a day. It depends on the wood. Boiling helps but after awhile it just comes apart and releases more tannic acid. I usually boil it for awhile until the water in the pot looks like blackwater. Leave it in a bucket for 2-3days. Then weigh it down in the tank and just do water changes more frequently for awhile until the color stops.

I put 3 large peices of driftwood in my 70g and despite soaking it for 3 days it still turned the water almose tea brown. but 3 weeks later the carbo sponge in my filter has removed almost all the colour leaving just a subtle tint, the fish like a little bit of tint, it takes the edge off the bright lighting for them.

Your buddy will be fine, Leon. Like Sham said, don't bother boiling the wood any more, just let it soak over a few days if you don't like the yellow colour. Drift wood is always quite a bit of effort, but i really don't think you can beat it for looks and 'authenticity' in try to re-create and eco system!

Good luck with your first fishy 'child'... don't forget to buy those Nitrite, Ammonia, and Nitrate test kits in addition to pH. Very useful if your friend does get sick.
