| Would are the biotopes of Harlequins and Neons? | |
sir_psycho![]() Fish Addict Posts: 590 Kudos: 13 Votes: 0 Registered: 31-Mar-2003 ![]() | I have been wondering because I want to do a biotope in my 29g and I love neon tetras and harlequins, but I want to know which one would be easier, or anything about them for that matter, and what each biotope would offer when it comes to tankmates...any information would be appreciated. Tankmates for harleys in a 29 gallon could include one of the smaller loach species like yo-yos etc., a betta or smaller gourami as "centerpiece fish". For neons, I think you'd be able to have a school or cory cats for the bottom and maybe 1 angelfish (bought small, of course) as a centerpiece. Possibly even a ram/ apisto or two. This site is a great place to start researching |

Lots of red-orange with the fish colors, reddish plants, two interesting pieces of driftwood. This is a pic from a couple months ago, I need to take some new ones ![]() Theresa_M attached this image: ![]() ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

sir_psycho![]() Fish Addict Posts: 590 Kudos: 13 Votes: 0 Registered: 31-Mar-2003 ![]() | I think I like the asian biotope a bit more, and what kind of loaches could I have with harlequins, and the same thing about cyprinid sharks...but I think the sharks will get too big/aggressive, and aren't flying foxes ottos??? EDIT::: I need to know about the filtration, would a penguin 170 cut it? I already have an Ebo-Jager 50w heater...so thats good...for a 29 gallon right? I went higher when it comes to wattage so I would not have to worry about the heater not heating the water adequetely Also I am not ruling out the amazon biotope but could I get a large school of Neons, a ram or two, and some cories and still have an amazon biotope??? SECOND EDIT::: eeeee I think I mean around 250w heater...I should think before I post, and tonight I will check and also I will order a filter later...I am missing one, due to the fact that the old filter broke after not being used for so long but still having water in it...I think it rusted it and when I tried to fix it...well....needless to say it went to hell.... Yo-yo's, skunk, dwarves - anything that stays under 4 inches. If they would be the only bottom feeders then 4 would be a good number to get. Some people have sharks like red-tails or rainbows in 29 gallon tanks, but I think they're better off in something like a 55 gallon since they can grow to 6+ inches and are aggressive as they age. Flying foxes are not otos - a flying fox is a asian cyprinid, while otos are south american catfish. Flying foxes may also be a little too large and active for a 29 gallon, IMO. A 250 watt heater is A LOT It shouldn't be a problem, though, because ebo-jagers are pretty reliable so I wouldn't fear it "cooking" your fish.could I get a large school of Neons, a ram or two, and some cories and still have an amazon biotope??? If they are the only fish in the tank, then yes, that will give you a very nice south-american biotope. Though you may want to replce the neons with cardinals (which look identical) - only b/c neons are a more sensitive fish. Last edited by NowherMan6 at 20-May-2005 12:42 |

Marineland redid their penguin designs a little and I think it's now a 150 and 350. On my 29g I have a penguin 170 and as backup a very small whisper filter. I overfilter my tanks so a 150 should be fine. |

sir_psycho![]() Fish Addict Posts: 590 Kudos: 13 Votes: 0 Registered: 31-Mar-2003 ![]() | Ok, I just ordered the penguin 150b filter, and I should be getting it within a week(I ordered it last night, Tuesday May 24) and also I think I like this setup 10 Cardinals 2 Rams 6 or 8 cories(whichever amount of cories is good for a tank this size) WoW Addict and proud of it 1.66g Hex - Nothing as of yet 29g - Nothing as of yet |

Yeah, that would be cool. You have a bit of leftover room in there, so I'd suggest having at least eight of the cories, depending on which species you get. Some grow in excess of three inches, while others are really small, and still others are medium-sized, etc. etc. Check your lfs to see which ones you like, then research them and find out their maximum size. The smaller your Corydoras, the more of them will fit in the tank. |

sir_psycho![]() Fish Addict Posts: 590 Kudos: 13 Votes: 0 Registered: 31-Mar-2003 ![]() | I will plant, and also could I up the number of Harlequins instead? I always like them and I always wanted a big school of em. WoW Addict and proud of it 1.66g Hex - Nothing as of yet 29g - Nothing as of yet |
