What type of fish can you feed zucchini to. I heard you have to blanch it before putting it in the tank, is this true and if so how do you blanch something.

Veggie eating fish will benefit from this (eg, Bristlenose)

I don't blanch the zucinni although I put a rubber band round it and attached it to a heavy rock.

But to blanch something you semi-cook it.

Yeah, blanching normally involves passing boiling water over the food, then cooling it in cold water. It's kind of half cooking, as already said. You should find any bottom feeder will like green vegies. Pea's are another good one as they cure HITH, constipation and you don't have to cook them... just shell them, split in half and drop them in. All of my fish (Oscars, BN's, Clown Loaches, Brasiliensis, Moorii) love peas, and i've met a few other Cichlid owners who feed pea's and zucchini as part of a well balanced diet.

I've been feeding zuchinni to my fish for a number of years and I do blanch it first as it causes the zuchinni to sink and in that way you don't have to use a feeding clip or attach it to something. I just drop it in a boiling pot of water for just a few seconds and half cook it.

My pleco's love it and many of the other fish will pick at it also.

I use cucumber slices as well as zuchini. My black banded leporinus love it as much as my pleco. My severums and eartheaters nibble at it as well.

my cories and pearl gourami eat zucchini.. i attach it to a rock with a band around it.. they seem to start eating at it once it softens up after a couple of hours. My pandas love it!! nearly all bottom feeders will attempt at eating it.. but zucchini is just a start there are many other like cucumber, banana etc.

I feed zucchini to my clown loaches. I've blanch it before putting it in the tank as well as just slicing it and putting it in the tank raw. It doesn't really seem to make a difference to them one way or another.

Anything that is fresh that I plan on feeding to the fishies, I just toss in the microwave for a few seconds till it is a bit mushy, but still firm (10 secs?) then run under cool water, and slice/dice and feed. I know Leslie uses a fork, stabs the zuchini or what have you with it, and chunks it in...for my cichlids, i just toss it in, it never lasts long:%) Just be sure to shut the lid before you get wet...:%)Heidi
