"He was the biggest fish in the tank at about 4 1/2 inches and lately I noticed he got nipped at a bit by something else in the tank, but otherwise, he was king of the tank due to his size. It is a 40 gal tank with 2 baby african cichlids (about 3 inches) a pleco and a mono"

First - NEVER mix african cichlids with another type of cichid. It was them for sure nipping your oscars fins and stressing the crap out of him.. He most likely jumped the tank trying to escape his tormentors. I have tried mixing africans with oscars before, so I know of what I speak.

Second - Your tank overstocking problem is now reduced quite a lot, but it's still there with the pleco.. Oscar and pleco in 40g was quite too much, an oscar needs a 55 gal home and that would be for just one fish. I'd not be adding more fish to your existing tank. You are probably already wondering what fish to add to your tank next to replace your oscar. DON'T. It is stocked well enough. Don't be surprised if the africans kill your mono as well. Although the pleco might be ok.

Third - A little research into what space requirements your fish need and what tankmates would be good or not good for them would have prevented your oscars death. I'm not 'telling you off' as I did the same thing myself, but if anything LEARN from your mistake, for the sake of your fish.

Lol...I'm already over it. It did not stink because it had not been that long, but I did leave my window open just incase. I have decided to have an african cichlid tank instead. Right now I have my original 3" pleco an 10 new africans + my baby kenyi (which was in there). I got rid of my orange blotch because he developped quite the mean streak, and he now lives in my friends tank with a pirahna. Going onto week two, my cichlids seem to be doing quite well together, and my orange blotch is still alive in my friends tank. Thing is, I only had my oscar for 2 months, so he wasn't quite family yet . Thanks for the comments.

...nothing more depressing than a fish biting the dust...especially those ones you had for so long they were practically a member of the family...:#(...hopefully you'll get over it...:#(:88)

well, i bet you'll keep the lid on now. you should anyways, b/c dust and dirt will get into the water if you don't

did it start to stink at all?

My dad used to have an oscar, and I remember always hearing the plastic lid, opening and closing, cause of him jumping and hitting it. Never jumped out though
Sry to hear about your oscar

If I had a big enough tank, I'd get an oscar.

I have had My one O jump out of my tank. He's alot bigger then yours, he pushed up the glass lid with his force and got out.

I heard the splash so I ran to my tank and sure enough heres Black cotton on the floor flopping, with my two kittys and my dog thinking of playing with him.

I used a plastic spoon (cooking sppon almost flat) and my net to get him off the floor.

I put him back in the tank and had to pick out hair of my carpet.

His stress coat was messed up to...badly but he got better after about a week.

ALSO I've had a goldfish juump out and by the time I found him he was fish jerky..behind the dresser as well....

As was said your africans did it (picking) Da fish mans post is JUST what I was gonna put. Hes right and speaks from experience.

He was the biggest fish in the tank at about 4 1/2 inches and lately I noticed he got nipped at a bit by something else in the tank, but otherwise, he was king of the tank due to his size. It is a 40 gal tank with 2 baby african cichlids (about 3 inches) a pleco and a mono. I saw him before i went to bed and when i woke up he was nowhere to be found. I cleaned the gravel and did a water change and was still unable to find him. I turned over rocks and what not and havent found him. I don't think he was eaten because of his size and the fact that there was no sign of his presence in the tank. This is very odd and I havent found him anywhere around the tank (if he jumped out of the aquarium). What do you think happened? Is it common for oscars to "jump" out of their tanks?

I had an oscar that jumped out even with the plastic lid closed. I had tought him to jump up and take a work out of my fingers. I think he thought the water droplets that were forming on the inside of the lid was food because after a while he was jumping up and banging the lid. Same thing happened...I fed him that morning, came home and he was gone...no sign of him at all...turns out he flopped around until he ended up under the living room chair. I finally found him almost 2 days later when i decided to turn the place upside down.

Found my oscar...
He was behind the dresser that my aquarium is on. I looked everywhere really well so I didn't think he jumped back there, but he did. I must have looked at him 3 or 4 times before i realized it was him. I found him a full 24 hours after I realized he was missing so there's no hope for him living. Why do fish jump out of tanks? He was about 4 & 1/2 inches long and he must have jumped out the gap between the light and the back of the tank (a whole 3 inches or so) so I believe even if the lid was secure, it wouldn't have saved him.
P.S.no dogs or cats here, so that was ruled out b4 i found him...

A Big one Lost? It Must have Jumped the tank.
How Big is your Pleco?? I think It Possible if The Pleco is really big that the oscar died after 'lights Out' and then it was slowly eaten by the Pleco. they really eat everything and Don't forget the help of the african cichlids they could have also helped eating the Oscar.

Nevertheless I think If this has happened then you pleco was really Starving coz I don't think otherwise you wouldn't see any remainings.

Just My Humble Opinion.

Miguel

I would start looking everywhere around the tank. My guess would be that he jumped ship and flopped off somewhere. Do you happen to have a cat or dog in the house that might have gotten a hold of it?

Edit: Were you just growing him in the tank with the other guys? It does't sound like an ideal home for him if it was.

There is a lid on the tank but i usually leave it open, it was open... And all i have are rocks in there that he could possibly hide in, although I dont know him to do that and I overturned all of them. I have a feeling Ima find him somewhere in my room where I least expect him...
