Asian Arowanas are microchipped in addition in order to conform to CITES legislation, which states that the species in question must ONLY be sold on the market if the specimen has been captive bred. So in the case of the Scleropages Arowanas, all captive bred specimens are microchipped so that they can be tracked. Any specimen that isn't microchipped will therefore be a wild caught (and illegally sold) specimen. If at this point, anyone is thinking of acquiring a breeding pair and making a lot of money, then be advised that you'll need a LOT of starting capital to get the project up and running - a proven breeding pair of Dragon Fish (as they're known in Asian markets) will cost you about the same amount of money as a brand new Ferrari sports car.

"You paid 3x too much, by the way"

Not really, I only paid $300 for her, she's now worth $1000 because US Customs & Border Protection says so. My hubby (Customs Agent) took her to a narcotic detection training program for dogs at work because he noticed those qualities in her that make a dog a good drug dog, she passed her certification with a score of 100% and they have her insured for $1000. She goes to work with him every day, and she has 'busted' several loads of drugs coming into the country including a load of cocaine worth $500,000. Helluva dog, and when they get home she goes back to being the family pet!

Sorry, I digress....I understand the microchip fish thing now, just seemed odd at first. That makes sense about the tank bred vs. wild caught thing.

I think the most expensive fish is the one that you introduce to your tank that kills off, through disease or whatever, all your favorite fish.

MrWizerd- I absolutely love Vespicula Depressifrons. I have wanted to get some of these guys as well but I cannot find any information on them either. Maybe you could pm me with some information you have abotu them. They are quite cute I think.
By the way, I just loved your show when I ws growing up!

Koi Keeper- I guess I can understand the microchipping then for the most part since you mentioned the showing.
I guess I have never really think about people showing fish, it jsut seems kind of silly to me when I think about it because I am big into the dog shows and I imagine a fish on a leash flopping down the runway ya know?

But I digress... I will be spending a lot more on my SW fish than I have ever spent on any FW, so I guess I can't complain about what I have paid so far.

With the koi they sometimes turn up for sale at a show. Or they might be being shown. Only way to prove ownership when it comes to stolen fish.

So what all special can the lab do?

Empty chairs at empty tables, the room silent, forlorn.

You learn something new everyday!! I didn't know there were microchipped fish, that's kinda neat in a way. The only thing that puzzles me is how the heck are you going to find it if it gets stolen? You supposed to just bust into someone's place and see if they have a fish tank, and if they do, scan the arrowana? It makes a lot more sense to chip dogs because eventually they'll end up at a vet and scanned. But fish? not sure i dig that...

$1000 AKC registered yellow lab

My most expensive was my German Blue at 15.99 however, he died recently and I have not a clue as to why all my levels where fine, nothing seemed physically wrong with him. Oh well, I think now my most expensive is my Figure 8 Puffer at 9 dollars, however, I think that my next few purchases may end up costing me a lot more because they may end up being very hard to find. The bumlebee goby will be simple but the red striped toadfihs (tetraodon erythrotaenia) and if I descide to get a bit more ornate with one or two of my goby they may end up costing but the one that will probably be the most expensive/hard to find will be the Vespicula Depressifrons (butterfly goby(which is a misnomer) or Wasp Fish or goblin leaf fish. I have found it hard to get info on these but I am going to get one of these venomous guys who have "a face only a mother could love"

Still trying to get a supplier for them though.

I would microchip my $75 mutt, but that is only because if anything ever happened to her I would absolutely die! It's funny that the fish that are some of the most expensive are in some ways the ugliest. Those Arrowana are some ugly fish. I know some people love them but I don't think anyone would say that they are pretty.

That's a face only a mother could love ya know?

I visited my LFS yesterday, and I saw these beautiful catfish (platydoras Raphael) and Just wanted to have one.
They had no price on them so I asked the man how much?
he said they were around $1000 for a 15cm.
Well, I almost had a heart attack but It got me wondering whats the most expensive fish you've paid for?

Mine is a $35 sailfin Pleco.

also does anyone know where I can purchase one of these fish for $50 and under? Ha Ha Ha

You microchip a fish because they are stolen. More often than you would think when it comes to the expensive fish. Koi have sold for far more than that. This thread comes up pretty often and the two most expensive fish usually end up being the koi and the arrowanas.

I put a microchip in my $1000 AKC registered yellow labrador retriever, and she has four legs and could run off or be lead away......why in the world would you microchip a fish? Where's it gonna go?

If you think a $1000 is expensive you should see this arrowana for sale at a LFS in Calgary Ab. it is microchipped and registered selling for $25000

Why would you need to microchip a fish? Are they afraid it will get tired its owners and flop away?

I paid I think $260US for 1 Syno Granulosus and 1 Syno Angelicus. Combined deal. The price tag was $294 for the Granny and $100 for the Angelicus(6" show specimen). I was happy with it.

OH MY GAH! ... and I thought my 4.99 cardinals(I almost freaked when I realized I spent $30 bucks on 6 fish) , and my 8.49 clown loaches were expensive! I had no clue that FW fish could were ever that expensive! Does he poo gold? Is he extremely rare or something? How come he is SO expensive?

I can't think of ANY reason ANYONE would spend $1000 on a fish, especially since it isn't even 6 inches long!

currently my most expensive is my $4 betta. and the cichlids i'm looking at to stock my 150 are going to run between 8 and 15 each. and i'm looking at about 30 or more total fish.

but most expensive i've seen was the Silver Arowana's that were between 6 and 8 inches and started at $95 up to $150.
