I have a school of 6 glass catfish. They have been together close to two years. Last night after feeding, they were behaving as I had never seen them before. Two would line up parallel and push the main part of their bodies (head and organ sac area) against each other vigorously(both facing the same direction). They were not biting, but it seemed that they were intertwining their "whiskers" on the side against each other.

I watch the tank very often, it is kind of like TV to me, and this has not happened before that I have seen.

The school is very prominent in my tank, they usually occupy a space in the center of the tank close to the viewing side of the aquarium, and swim against the powerhead current.

Have any of you witnessed this behavior before?

Thank you for any insight.

I have never seen such behavior before. One of my closest friends has some glass catfish, and I asked him about it, he said he has never seen it before, and like you he watches his tank very often.
I'm pretty sure he said he has four glass catfish and a few other fish.
But I don't know of them?

It sounds like some sort of dominance dispute to me.

It is definitely social behavior. However, from what I know of documented spawning of this species in the wild, they live in dynamic colonies, therefore having no defined "dominant" fish. I see this regularly amongst both species of my kryptopterus, or at last something similar--they swim parallel to one another, and suddenly explode in different directions. This even occurs between my smallest and largest specimens, therefore it is unlikely that this is a struggle for dominance.

Corries will be corries...who knows why they do what they do...mine swim up and down the face of the tank, chasing their reflections:%)

My first thought was that they were spawning, but apparently I can't keep my parallel and perpendicular lines straightit's been a long day

That or who knows...corries are known for making their owners wonder, "What the heck are you doing that for?"

If there didn't appear to be any violence between them, I wouldn't worry...and you aren't the only one who uses their fish tank as a tv, it's more enjoyable most of the time

No one has spawned this species is captivity before, so I doubt that is what's happening here unless it's a huge tank with very specialised water parameters.

Sorry for the goof up on my part...I had read the posting and automatically assumed glass catfish as being catfish cory type...So I do apologize, I do read posts, and I do make mistakes from time to time...so excuse me...heidi
