someone on one of my other threads said that it would be best to raise my own feeders.

feeder white clouds in the uk at my LFS are £1 each (US$2 roughly) so i would save a fortune and maybe make some $$$ in the process

I dont have the first clue how to breed fish

it would be mainly white clouds i would try to breed and maybe feeder goldfish

how do i breed and raise them??
can i breed/raise them in the same tank (clouds&goldfish)?
what kind of setup would i need??

I want to spend a minimal amount of money so what the smallest tank size i can get to breed them?

Why not guppies as feeders...or are they too small ...
Guppies can breed in a 10 or so, and are plenty active about providing young.

Goldfish need a rather large tank, and from what I've read generally need a "winter" (drop to freezing) before they begin breeding.

Guppies are a great idea However you may have to wait a while
for them to get big enough for your oscar.
Otherwise live food could be just the occasional treat say once every couple days. There is plenty of other stuff you can feed your oscar besides fish. You could try earthworms, steamed shrimp, chicken( my polypterus eats this up) etc.

See what your Oscar prefers if he likes to chase around and catch the clouds. Then i would recommend buying some and keeping them in there own tank and feeding them high energy foods so that they will be of some nutritional value to your
Oscar

The baby guppies should be ok for your oscar to eat now and mabe by the time he gets big enough You will have plenty of full grown guppies to feed him.

Your local fish store doesnt caring any small tanks??
Mine has tons of 10g for 7$

Ebay is a great place too look but shipping might make the price of the tank a little hefty.

I would consider taking a look around town it might save you a couple bucks.

Yep check your classified section in your papers (even the freebe ones) for a few weeks. More often than not people get 10 gallon tanks thinking they can keep goldfish in them without changing the water or any other number of illsuited fish for tanks that size. When everything goes wrong they just sell them...or toss them out .
Also ask around to friends, family members coworkers that sort of thing...same situation...people try fish starting with a really small tank and end up putting it in storage when things don't work.

I've got to agree with babel...go with guppies, and get a decent size tank...say 29 gallons...throw in 3 females for every male...add some plants that float, anarcharis is great, and then watch the action, every 28-32 days the females will drop fry for you the first drop may only be as little as 5-10, but as the female gets older they number will increase...

kts's first drop with sunshine was only 3 or 4, sunshine's second drop was at least 30 before she bailed out of the breeding net in order to save her own sanity

If you want them to grow a bit faster, you can increase the temp of the grow out tank, by a couple of degrees, feed the fry hardboiled egg yokes, that have been boiled longer than normal, just crumpled up...do 10-15% water changes daily, and watch them grow...you'll have feeders in no time:#(I'm only crying because i love my guppies and would hate to see them become oscar's lunch, just don't get attached...

best of luck, heidi

Rather than a 29, it's better to go with a 30.
The tanks are only one gallon different, however the suface area is much larger in a 30 than a 29...which is why you see the name "breeder tank" attached to the long low ones.

kelly i dont want money i want a health oscar!!!!

do you eat fish at a restaraunt or at home????

do you eat meat?????????

meat comes from animals that have feelings !!!! u eat it to live would you like to be fed processed foods everyday like you are asking me to feed my oscar??

I LOVE FISH OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE NOT TAKEN PART IN THIS AMAZING HOBBY and to be honest the fact that you say all i want is money hurts me. if i did breed fish yes i might sell some of the fish to my LFS but that would be for 2 reasons

1 to be able to afford the upkeep of my tanks

2 because i wouldn't be able to accomadate all the fish in the long run

Why do you want to feed your oscar feeders. They're not the best for them and not even the best live food for them. You can only feed them feeders a couple time a months because of the high amounts of fat. Get him some earthworms instead of feeder and he'll will be just as happy. There is a reason the companies spend so much money on developing good pellet food.
