Current occupants include
2 blue gouramis ( m/f pair)
1 medium angel
10 long finned danios( mix of leopard and golden zebra)
6 emerald "cories"
1 bn pleco

I want something for the top 1/3 of the tank, that is colorful and active as most of the activity in the tank is in the mid to bottom.

Any suggestions??

You can add a school of 8/10 Tetra's, maybe some Rummynose or Glolights.

Rummys are a great fish, but I have a school of 8 and they stay more toward the bottom 1/3. I think Harquelins go higher in the water column and are active and colorful.

Actually in a 55 you could do a school of Congo Tetras. These are beautiful active fish that occupy th top 1/3.

Id love congos-or rainbows but neither are available in my area

schooling fish readily available in my area are:

tetras- flame, glowlight, neon, bleeding hearts, head and tail lights, flames,black/white skirts, buenos aires

rasboras- harlie, lambchop, scissor tails

wcmm and danios

barbs- rosies, cherry, tiger

Out of whats available- what would stay closer to the top of the tank, and give some color?

Sorry your stock selections are limited.
If you want a bigger schooler go with the Rosy Barbs, but if you put 15 plus Harleys in there that would be a pretty site. The Harleys never stop moving and are a true schooling fish regardless of conditions.

Rosies are very active, mine will use the whole tank often playing cory and sticking their noses in the bottom. I worry though that a small school of 6 would actually have enough swimming room in your tank. Like I said they're rather active . Additionally I'd be worried a bit about being too much for the angel.

WCMM's for the most part (IME anyway) tend to stay to the top, and the males love to flare and dance with each other showing off for the girls so even if they seem somewhat bland in the store the color up nicely, are active but not in a picky way and seem like they might fit your bill .

I had had a school of rosy barbs in this tank before a power outage crashed the tank= and i lost them , I think theyd be to much for the angel also ( dh had to have an angel....)Since the rosies have been gone, the tank is kinda drab .

The wcmm sound good, but i really didnt want something shaped like the danios....but theyll stay closer to the top...

Debating between harlies and wcmm- id like a school of 10-12

So which sounds better- harlies or wcmm???
