I'v got algae growing on my plastic plants. I'v tried scrubbing on them but they never get totally clean (the only good thing I can see coming from this is a big feast for my chineese algae eater). is there any way to cleanse my plants of algae?

Thanks, C.J.T

I have the same problem. I would just leave the plants like that because all my fish eat the algae.

It depends on the type of algae it is, to determine what is causing it. Can you describe it? I have just went through some problems with algae myself, after a couple of tries, I finally got it right with a few Ottos. Just an excellent algae eater who really "cleans up" I have actually had a CAE, before I changed the setup and occupants of my tank, and found that for an algae eater.....he really wasn't very good. I've only had these Ottos (which I got 5 for my 29 gal. tank, 1 died so 4 left..another story ),for a couple of days and I have noticed a significant difference. See if you can give a description of the algae, there are many smart people here at FP, i'm sure someone can get to the source of your problem. A tank size, filter, light and stock list would be of value to help you too! Good luck and Welcome to FP!

The easiest way is to dip them in a bucket that has 1 cup of bleach to 19 cups of water. Be sure that it is unscented bleach. Algae will turn white when dipped in the solution and you can easily scrub off any remnants. Try the solution on your least favorite plastic plant to see if they are colorsafe.

Be sure to rinse them very well after their dip. If there is any trace smell of bleach, then place them in a clean bucket with water and dose with water conditioner that eliminates chlorine.

I'm willing to bet you are over feeding and/or overlighting (heck i'm to blame for it also) Get yourself some mts and they will help take care of any and all algaeand if you can't find some let me know an address, and I can send you some...they do really well at getting rid of any extra "stuffes" you might have in the tank. Heidi

ps don't post your address on the post, just pm it to me, if you want some. Heidi
