I'm on the verge of finally having my first successful cory rearing adventure. I have a little over 50 aenus going strong. Some are 3 weeks old, some are 2 weeks old, and about 10 are almost a week old.

The first (and biggest) batch I hatched out in a container. I felt sorry for the poor little fellas in that container after a week, so I decided that I was slowly going to transfer them over to an established (and what I thought was an empty) 10 gallon tank.

So, 5 at a time I moved them. Taking care to acclimate each group of 5 for about 45 minutes. It was at this time that I realized that the 10 gallon tank was no longer empty. You see, I had put a couple danio's in there without a heater about a week earlier. I used a sponge filter from another tank and some plants, so I really wasn't worried much about a cycle....besides, they are just babies. I saw a few little slivers of silver stuck to the side of the 10 gallon tank. Young danios of course...

I counted about 10 on the sides, none were free swimming yet, and I figured that the danios had gobbled up most of the eggs...and that was all that was left to hatch. Yup, I was wrong. As I stated earlier, there was no heater on the tank....and apparently that makes a HUGE difference in how fast an ebryo grows.....

I knew that the young cories should have a heater to help them get a little size on them fairly quick. I put a heater in there and over a few hours the temperature increased from a mild 70 to a fairly warm 80.

BABY DANIOS LIKE WARM WATER!!!!!

It was on then! The young danio's must have thought that the water was a little to chilly to come out of there comfy egg before, cause they were definately showing up now!

When I got in from work that day, I estimated that there were 100 tiny danios on the glass. The next day, they were all free swimming.

I have tried to raise danios several times in the past, but only 10-20 ever seem to survive. This time I wasn't trying or expecting, and I still have about 100 danios that are now two weeks old. Most of the time I lost the most within the first week.... these one are doing well though.

So now in that 10 gallon tank I have about 100 danios and 50+ aenus cories. All eating microworms, and some have starting taking live baby brine shrimp. The cories are a fair bit bigger than the danios, so they get a half of an earthworm stick every evening which they attack with the ferocity of a school of tiger barbs eating blood worms.

Now, in a few weeks I have to figure out how and where to separate them all to. I think they will all be fine in the 10 gallon for a couple more weeks though. ...

It has been an interesting few weeks!! Never know what I am coming home to lately...speaking of which, the 3 aenus cories in the 20G tank spawned today. Looks like another 50-75 eggs. I might just leave those ones in there... I dont have any more room to hatch them...and I'm never gonna get to work with my tiger barbs at this rate.

So not fair! I want fry!

All I've got is guppy fry, and well, you know... just add water to get guppies to breed.

Of course, besides guppies, there's just a very limited selection as to the fish in my tanks that COULD have fry. Still... one can hope!

Thats the easy part...getting the babies raised is a bit tricky at times.

Just fatten up your danios with plent of good conditioning food. I have the best luck with frozen (not freeze dried) bloodworms. Feed them heavy for about a week, and you will see your females looking fairly plump.

Take out 1 plump female, and 1 male and put them in a 10 gallon tank about 1/2 full of water. Make sure you do it in the evening about 1 hour before it gets dark in the room they are in.

Make sure there is something in the bottom to prevent the danios from consuming their eggs right after they lay them.

At first light in the morning, your danios will spawn...provided they are not disturbed. Just leave them alone till around noon or so. Dont put any artificial light on them or anything.

Take the 2 danios out about noon. Crank the temperature up to about 80F. Dont use any lights on the tank..the light will make the eggs fungus fast, and the fungus can spread to healthy eggs. In fact, you can even put a towel over most of the tank to keep it dark.

After about 3 days, you can remove the towell and expect to see tiny fry either free swimming or stuck to the sides of tank. They are VERY tiny, so if you dont see any at first, dont worry... they could still be in there.

Be sure to have microworms or liquifry on hand to feed them!
