DJ that is a deviation from the topic, and it will get us no
where to go down that path.

Here is a swimming pool 'tank' .

It looks really nice IMO. Thoug hI do question his stock
since it appears he has Africans in the pool :bb), though my
eyes could be playing tricks on me.

LOL, I live in the middle of the city, and my back yard is up against solid woods. I personally have 9 trees in my yard. And yes, I have city water.

If I were building a tank that large, I would have done more homework than this guy did. He wouldn't have needed such small panels, he would have use larger pieces, the size of one wall,

10 years ago, anything bigger than what he got, would have cost about 3 times what he has there. The pieces he is using now, ran over $1,000 each back then. A 10 foot long section, 6 foot tall, and 2 inches thick, was over $25,000 each. So, it cost him around $10,000 for what he got, instead of about $75,000 if he would have went with the larger pieces.

As for the Bass Pro Shops, I cant say for the one near you, but the one here is cleaned by a friend of mines company. And they change out 20% of the water every 6 months.

Back when this guy did this tank, there was not a lot of info available about doing such a large tank. I admit, I would have done some things different, but that is just me and my knowledge and my theories. I think his filter is just fine.

Personally, I would DIY filter too. I would use built products, but I would not waste my money having someone else build it.

IMO, his biggest problem, was too much lighting for a FW tank. And probably the wrong spectrum. In the few tanks of large size (2,000-10,000 gal) that I have helped build, we have never had a problem with green water. We learned a few tricks in the early ones, as to prevent it from clouding up for weeks. But never a problem with green water.

If I had my way, my bedroom would be surrounded by one large tank with a small space left open for a door. I must admit I have always been a fish out of water and just to be surrounded by fish like that would be absolutely amazing./:'

Hi,thought id add an interesting story i was told to this post.

I was visiting a town near by and as i always do, had a look at their LFS, they had a few interesting plecos so i enquired about the prices, the guy who works there was quite friendly and told me of a local lady who had bought a small property near by, it seems that the house she bought had a built in fish tank, the previous owner left his fish in the tank as he was moving interstate.

Now some of these fish were not to her tastes, apparently she thought they looked like ugly strange coloured flat head, so she instructed her husband to dispose of them and bought some nice gold fish, not wanting to kill them he freed them into the dam on the property.

A few years passed and the fish were forgotton about and presumed dead. One day some friends visited who had kids and naturally they found their way to the dam, the parents went to find their little angels when it was time to leave and the farther who is an avid aquarium hobbyist noticed some fish in the dam, so he had a closer look, to his amazment he discovered hundreds of plecos.

He informed his friends of the find and told them that their was quite a bit of money in these fish, apparently the wife at first was horrified that the disgusting fish wernt taken care of by her husband as promised, but she came around when they worked out that there was over $250k worth of fish in there.

Apparently they are planing to expand with different L series plecs and retire quite wealthy.

The LFS guy did not tell me the names or location of the people but he seemed quite genuine.

Theres a guy in the uk with a 50,000 gal marine reef aquarium, he runs RO water into it 24/7 lets an overflow drain it off and just tops up the salts etc. Must cost megabucks to run. A lottery win, and id have him over to help me out with one

There is no way that he is running city water. If you look at his picture there are lots of trees around. Not normaly the sign of a city.

Now come on...........if you had the cash and the fish problem........what else would you do? His tank is pretty sweet I must say. The questions about his water bill........There is no way that he is running city water. If you look at his picture there are lots of trees around. Not normaly the sign of a city.

On a side note.....what ever happened to the guy with the swimming pool?

Honestly, I can't say I ever thought about big aquariums doing water changes. Either way, in a house, the water will get stale, regardless, no?

What did they treat the walls with? I would think they would use a pool lining or something but the moisture will soak through and the mold in that place will be horrific.

Then again... what do I know?!?....

Pardon my ignorance, but why would you even bother changing the water on a tank of that size? Just overload on filtration. As far as I know big aquariums dont change the water in their giant tanks. I can't imagine he's overstocked...
