Hi,thought id add an interesting story i was told to this post.

I was visiting a town near by and as i always do, had a look at their LFS, they had a few interesting plecos so i enquired about the prices, the guy who works there was quite friendly and told me of a local lady who had bought a small property near by, it seems that the house she bought had a built in fish tank, the previous owner left his fish in the tank as he was moving interstate.

Now some of these fish were not to her tastes, apparently she thought they looked like ugly strange coloured flat head, so she instructed her husband to dispose of them and bought some nice gold fish, not wanting to kill them he freed them into the dam on the property.

A few years passed and the fish were forgotton about and presumed dead. One day some friends visited who had kids and naturally they found their way to the dam, the parents went to find their little angels when it was time to leave and the farther who is an avid aquarium hobbyist noticed some fish in the dam, so he had a closer look, to his amazment he discovered hundreds of plecos.

He informed his friends of the find and told them that their was quite a bit of money in these fish, apparently the wife at first was horrified that the disgusting fish wernt taken care of by her husband as promised, but she came around when they worked out that there was over $250k worth of fish in there.

Apparently they are planing to expand with different L series plecs and retire quite wealthy.

The LFS guy did not tell me the names or location of the people but he seemed quite genuine.

Theres a guy in the uk with a 50,000 gal marine reef aquarium, he runs RO water into it 24/7 lets an overflow drain it off and just tops up the salts etc. Must cost megabucks to run. A lottery win, and id have him over to help me out with one

start them all the same size and watch them grow.... or would they get to big?

that's just eccentric, if you ask me. 50% of his income and 90% of his time probably go into that tank. no way, not for me...

that tank probably costs him more in one week than it would for a season pass at a nearby aquarium.

look at all the problems he's had; rusting doors, fires, weakening floors. he's in way over his head. the water didn't even look clean, so half the time you probably couldn't even see your fish.

i be he regrets it now.

I actually like the idea spaz...and you have to admit, it is his money and if this is how he chooses to spend it, how on earth is it going to hurt you? He did mention that the water cleared up and has become clear since the first year of setting it up...also from reading the complete thread, he doesn't seem to upset about it either, and doesn't seem to regret it....

Now as for stocking it totally with neons:%)I'm not sure I want to even begin thinking about that total insanity I'm trying to visualize doing my "head count" on a tank that size full on neons:%)don't think i'd bother though

Now could we add some corries to the bottom as well? between the corries and neons i think it would be a really insane, happy go lucky tank

With a tank that size, I would probably want to do a
biotope. Like South American, and stock from larger fish all the way down to the little guys. Thatd be awesome.

That's when a guy can say I have 4 red tail sharks and 4 four channel cats, and I'm thinking a getting a school of pacus and a arrowana without anyone giving heat about his aquarium being to small.

Can you imagine somebody saying some of those of catfish get to 4 feet and he could reply would 50 000 gallons be enough?

quote from site
don't over feed and I do about 10,000 gallon water changes every week

seriously, how many buckets would that take from the tank to sink and then back again.
With my 5 gal bucket that would be 2000 trips and the week would be over before I finished and I would have to start again.

great idea, but in a tank that big does he really need to do 40,000L water changes every week? hats off to a true diyer ,some pics of the tank today would be great

in the back of my mind i plan on doing something similar but maybe 3m by 3m by 2m built into a hill .

i just hope it wasnt compo money he spent on the fish tank rather than improving his quality of life in the future

OH TOLEEDY!

think i could have some goldfish I know that seems a waste, but in his "small" tank wouldn't have to worry about heating it either, and that is one of his problems...

Even though a tank that size deserves big fish, I'd want some smaller ones as well that or maybe a smallMbuna set up

Heck with a tank that size, anything goes i'm sure, and it's only your imagination...

All those people who wonder why i describe mega tanks as civil engineering projects ... this proves my point eloquently. When you have to hire a 30 ton excavator to get the project off the ground, it's a civil engineering project.

In one sense, you have to admire his dedication to the project. But from the list of problems he's had, it's obvious that this is NOT for the rank amateur.

As for changing 10,000 gallons every week, his water company bill must be enormous. Unless he has a supplementary tank or pond in which he can age the water, his dechlorinator costs must be astronomical too ... just hang on a minute ...

My Tetra AquaSafe bottle I've just looked at is a 100 ml bottle. Says 5 ml treats 10 litres of water. So one bottle treats 200 litres of water. Now, he's changing 45,000 litres or so a week. so that's 225 bottles of dechlorinator at £3.65 per bottle, which is ... £821.25. If, as he stated in the article, he's working on a budget, somehow I don't think he's spending over £800 per week on dechlorinator. He MUST have some means of letting the water stand and lose its treatment chemical content prior to use. So where does he keep 10,000 gallons of water in a convenient spot for the transfer?

I'd probably want a shallower version - something truly ridiculous like 200 feet long - then put 2,000 Panda Corys in it and let them breed like mad.

He's NEVER moving house... EVER

I knew it was going to be impressive when I saw that bobcat to dig out a huge cavity. It looks wonderful. I love where he says "the green tinge to the water disappeared over the first YEAR. So people here wanting to shift such a symptom from their own tank should be thankful it takes a few weeks! Imagine the volume of water for it to take a year.

I will stick to my 4 ft home tank. 'nuff for me. No MTS for me...was to hard to move just the one.

ROFLMAO

Try moving 124 tanks (up to a 7 footer 265 gal) about 5 years ago, and again just last month!

I would love to have the tank he has there.
