I have been using Windex to clean the glass on my tank for the past three years, and I've had no problems. As long as you're not a retard and go squirting it into your tank, you'll be fine.

I think you would find 99% of cleaning products should not be used around any fish tanks at all.

All I have used for many years is Metho for cleaning the glass. It has never been a problem.

You can always put the glass cleaner directly onto the cleaning cloth by doing this there is far less danger of accidents and spillage into the tank.

I have seen reports of poisonings from using aerosol cleaners and other products around fish. I personally don't use harsh cleaners around the tanks (rarely use them at all because of health issues). Vinegar really works just as well for cleaning glass anyway, and it's far less likely to pose any harm to you or your fish.

As long as nothing goes in the water, than they're fine. Just keep the lid closed when you spray.

The use of non ionic surfectants like bleaches and toilet cleaners etc can be very poisonous to fish, far more so than windex- i think its called windowlene over here, and i use it with no problems, but the tanks are in big rooms, and i only clean the glass exterior about once a month. In confined spaces with poor ventilation is may be an issue as the airation pump may pick up the vapour, but generally you wont have problems. As the others have already said- its better to spray it into a cloth or kleenex directly in small amounts to lower the risk.

In terms of fish tank killing chemicals you are more likely to get major disasters from air fresheners, flea sprays, and fly sprays which should never really be used in rooms housing aquaria.

Most fish are probably killed from things people are likely to forget- I know someone who killed off all the fish in a 6 foot tank, having just used frontline flea killer on his cat- because he put a drop on his skin without realising and then put his hand in the water - duh.

A lot of people also forget the deodorant, hair gel or hairspray on their hands when working in aquaria- needless to say you should rinse your hands well before putting your hands in tankwater if you use such products.

People who use flea medicines or any other insect poison, cleaning product with a warning on it should read the label and have common sense. The product says that it is toxic to people and animals. The most important is that it is a POISON. Its purpose is to kill things, bacteria, fleas, and other things you don't want in you house. To people with half a brain this should mean it is not a good thing to mess around with near things you don't want to kill, which I hope includes you fish.

Aquarium Pharmaceuticals makes a product called the Safe & Easy Aquarium Cleaner. It comes in a spray bottle and is supposed to be good for cleaning fish tanks, as it is non-toxic. If you want to clean the outside of your tank, you can give this a try.

You should be able to find it in a fairly well-stocked fish/pet store, at least some Aquarium Pharmaceuticals products are carried by almost all U.S. retailers. Failing that, you can buy it online, at sites such as the following:

Just so that you know, this product won't help you with hard calcium buildups. You'll need vinegar or something similar for that.
