are swordtails and angelfish compatable?

have 55g freshwater and am getting ready to remove the fish I used to cycle the tank - danios (since added some swords as well) and add some calico koi angels - was going to remove the danios and swords and then add some cardinal tetras, one or two pearl gouramis then let the tank sit for a while and add the angels - now am having second thoughts and may just remove the danios and keep the swords - not add the tetras or gouramis and just have the swords and angels - would they get along - I've read different compatability charts - some say they are compatable - others say they aren't - the swords are velvet swords - one male, two females - thanks Dan

Years ago I kept swords, platies and angels in a 40 gallon tank with no trouble. It seemed the male swords were too busy chasing the females to trouble the angels. The male swords would spar between themselves at times.

I've read of angel aggresive swords though, so I would suggest trying the combo but keeping a eye out for possible aggression.

I would not try the mix in a small tank.

I have 4 swords in with a medium sized koi angel in a 29g tank. Everyone gets along just fine. They've been together for over 6months now.

we put like 20 swoard tails in the tank, and they nipped the angles to death.

Funny, I had it the other way around--I was using swordtails as dither fish for a pearlscale marble and a DDB (hey, they paired up themselves) breeding project. As I was watching the aquarium, a fair sized male green swordie swam by, and the double dark female bit off the poor fellow's entire sheath. Certain swords can be nippy, but it depends on the indivdual fish, I suppose. From then on, I either kept breeders to themselves or with other more robust dithers (young kissing gourami I raised for the LFS, hyphessies, etc.)---one particularly vicious gold veil female nearly killed a young kisser almost immediately post-introduction; a testament to the unexpected ferocity of breeding angels. I have my doubts that 3 pairs of breeding angels (incidentally, why'd you keep them all in the same tank?) would fall victim to ANY size swordy.

IME, i got 12 swordtails and 6 angels, they're doing fine together and the angels gets free food when the swordtails drop a batch of fry.
