ok heres one for all of you. the other day i was feeding my fish in my 55g, and as i was dropping in one of the bettas her pellets, i felt something very quickly brush the palm of my hand. it startled me pretty good.

well last night, i was feeding them again (never ending ), when i discovered what it was. one of my female betta's, violet, was jumping into my hand at feeding time. now i hold my hand with the food a good few inches above the tank. shes jumping a good 7" out of the water and dam is she fast. first time was into my hand, 2nd time she did it was threw, so fast i barely seen her.

anybody else have this happen to them?

the girls are very aerodynamic!

I've had them jump clear of the water a few times trying to get to the food the problem is when they jump up and whack the lid when they see you come over

Ive known gouramis to do this too- at least you know it eats and isnt afraid of you- which is nice. Better watch that jumping out and landing on the floor potential tho

If jumping behaviour is only at feeding times its no problem- if the fish start doing that a lot when there's no food at stake -better check the water quality.

I had a rainbowfish jump me and take a small scab off a cut on my finger once- it hit me four inches clear of the water , hell of a shot. I would assume that fish that do this are pretty good at catching insects from the surface. Your betta is probably just finding a way to satisfy those natural urges.

Just wait till a small moth gets into the tank lid , all my fish in a 140 gallon all drop whatever they were doing to target it. Looks like folks gathering for a lynching .lol.

Im dying to get that action shot of a fish taking a moth from the air

My female will jump about half an inch to take bloodworms from me, but nothing nearly as impressive as yours

Hi, i have angel fish that will come out of the water about half their body height to get food, usually bloodworms.

I caught some very small fresh water shimp the other day and all my fish went mad for them, esspecially the clown loaches, they are always very enthusiastic when it comes to live food.

Lost one betta that way ....and a rosy barb >.< Was from a covered tank too .

My male bettas would always make a lunge but never 7" up ! impressive ! Now the one fish that makes the most show of getting fed is my goldfish ....when they see me approach he sticks his whole head up from the water and mouths at the air as if just asking to be fed :%)...he's managed to hit the "pond" cover plenty of times before too....about 3-4" over the water...just hope they dont' hurt themselves doing that >.<
