Sounds like my Malaysian driftwood. Did you get it at the LFS?

Yeah, looks like Malaysian Driftwood. I got mine at either Petsmart or Petco, I can't remember.

IMO, this stuff is some of the best wood to use in a tank... IF you could get all the tannins out. Being a dark wood, this can take a long time. (My 1st 10g had tannin colored water for months!)

About the only difference I know of from the light skinny stuff (I'm guessing that you don't mean Grapevine, which normally comes with bark) is where it comes from and how it's processed. The lighter colored stuff is normally sand-blasted, sun-bleached, completely dried out, or even all three.

As for the difference between driftwood and bogwood, I have my thoughts, but am not sure they are completely correct (or remotely), so I won't try to confuse you. I'm sure other, more knowledged people here can answer that better than I.

Biggest differences (that I'm aware of) is just where the piece of wood comes from. Bogwood coming from a bog or marsh (stagnent locations). Driftwood coming either from the beach or a lake. In both cases they're normally soaking in water for extended periods of time.
Like harleysiber I have my own further impressions of the differences which I probably shouldnt share....unless asked . If you bought it @a CPS its likely "fake" driftwood or bogwood anyway.

ahh i see...

yeah it took me a LONG time to get rid of the tannins out.. including boil the sucker 4 times 1hr each, and soak in water for 2 weeks, and left in tank for 3 weeks... but now its pretty good

actually when i first got it it was way too huge for my tank, so i used a tiny mini saw to cut it in half.....:%)lemme tell ya... it took about 2 hours with that tiny saw to cut a 3 inch diameter part cuz the wood was so dense

thanks guys

I'm with you on that !
And my lesson learned...dont use a dremmel to cut wet driftwood....smells ...umm...."intersting" to put it nicely .
Hacksaws and a well placed kick work much better!.
