ok heres what u do get some realy bushy low to the ground plants with a small grain sand, (u loose some fry in the gravel then set up some stem plants with small *close-together* leaves for when they get a little older, and heavely plant the rest of the tank with plants that go good with ur lighting, sort of make a forest then u cycle it, i recomend fishless, so u dont harm any fish, or have any unwanted fish, next go out and get 2 females from 1 lfs and 2 more from another, next go to a third (if u have a third around) and get 1-2 males that go with the colors of ur females, if u dont have a 3rd then just wait for the next shipment of a lfs. the reason for this is genitic diversity, so u get strong fish, then when the fry come out from hiding in a few weeks (if u left them in) start counting them, and seeing what kinds of colors u get, wait till they are full of color and pick out the fish u dont think will make nice additions (its almost like having ur own personal lfs) take out the ones u dont want, and set them up in a 10 gallon to finish growing, and when they are large enough take them to a lfs

In other words...get a nice tank...lots of plants and a few trios of guppies. Leave them for a few months and your tank will be full.

Last November I went on holidays for 6 weeks and came back with 2 tanks full of guppies small and big. I had that much i was going crazy trying to get rid of them.

Hi there, Yes, I think your LPS would likely give you store credit for any fry you raised, if not check around and find one that will.

Here are some things I've noticed about breeding guppies...

1. Once your female has been introduced to a male, they can have a batch of fry every month for 6-9 months.

2. You only need 1 male to every 2-3 females.

3. They can produce as few as 10 but as many as 200 (or so I've read) fry a month, every month

4. To breed them, you just need to throw them in a tank and wait.

5. Gestation period is 28-32 days ie, once a month.

6. You can leave the fry in with the adults without any problems, just be they have plenty of plants to hide in. I like Java Moss and Anarcharis. I usually plant the Anarcharis and leave some floating at the top.

7. Fresh born fry are very tiny, and almost transparent. And I have yet to see a newborn fry swim like a real fish, they more or less dart, it isn't till day 3-4 that they begin to kind of swim.

8. Within the first month they will more than likely double their sizes.

9. They can start breeding in 4-5 months, but sometimes as late as 6 months old. Meaning you can get 2-3 generations of guppies a year, which makes it nice if you are trying to breed for a specific trait

10. I find that my males will "develop their colors and tails" almost overnight, so don't be surprised if you wake up one morning to find you have "real guppies" in the tank color and all.

11. To help the fry grow at their best and fastest, do small water changes every day, feed them tiny amounts 3-4 times a day, and raise the temperature a little, I think Jamie said 80*F in another post. (Those are Jamie's words of adviceJamie I hope you dont mind me posting them)

12. I don't buy specialty fry food anymore, but this is what I do: Take an empty ziplock bag and put some of the food you feed your other fish in it. I tend to use TetraFlakes (yellow and brown can); but whatever you choose is fine; and some dried blood worms, and whatever else I have on hand, it's up to you, sometimes it's just the flakes that they get. Anyways take a couple of tbs of flakes, and some of everything else, if you choose, put them in the ziplock, seal the ziplock without air....and grind it between your palms, fingers, hands, whatever floats your boat...it will become a fine powdery substance...then Viola you have fry food...I tend to feed everyone from this. You can keep it in a bag, or put it in an empty fish food container...a little bit will go a long ways, and it tends to float quite well...If you have left some plants floating, the food will gather in there, and so will the fry.

I think that is all I can tell you, at least at the moment, I'm sure there is something else...

Let us know how it turns out, Heidi

Yup, it's quite easy in guppies really, the males have much longer fins, and are more colorful. But, here's a good link on telling the difference, hope it helps.

Not really... that's commonplace. I'd be more surprised to find a female guppy from a store that WASN'T pregnant!
