I finally convinced my ex to let my oldest son (12) get a 20g for Xmas (which he's wanted for a while now) He's had a 2.5g Mini-bow running for over a year plus he helps with my tanks while visiting here so he's not going into this blindly. So this is what we've purchased so far: -tank -stand -hood/light -filter -filter cartridge refills -heater -thermometer -AquaPlus -Mag-Float He already has a gravel vac...anything I'm missing? ![]() - ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Maybe some bio-spira? |

Although if possible could you go with seeded filters from one of your tanks? Hmm, on second thought a seeded filter might not work as a stocking stuffer .Dont blame me I dont understand this winter holiday business !.^_^ ![]() ![]() |

Nets large and small. Medications basics. Foods a good range. A good basic test kit. Some thing for cleaning the tank inside and out. A few buckets Have a good look at your stock as you could be missing some little thing that you use all the time. How about something to keep all these bits and pieces in. Have a look in [link=My Profile]http:// www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/forums/profile.asp?userid=6741" style="COLOR: #00FF00[/link] for my tank info [link=Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tanks]http://photobucket.com/albums/b209/keithgh/Betta%20desktop%20tank/" style="COLOR: #00FF00[/link] Keith ![]() ![]() Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. I think he's going to take down his 2.5g so could he use the filter cartridge from that to help cycle the new tank? I could send him home with one of mine, but would it survive a 9 hour drive, and if so how? Foods a good range My girls have a 10g running so I think between them they have a decent variety of basic foods. Right now he's supposed to be doing homework for this...lots of reading about the cycle and coming up with a list of potential fish he'd like to keep. I told my ex a lfs gift card would be a nice additional present so he could at least get gravel and maybe starter fish. Thanks for the replies so far. ![]() ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Now I'm slowly adding the fish to prevent a large mini-cycle (sounds weird). Does he have fish books? A book about fish health may be a nice thing to get. It's great that he's so into this and ready to care for it and do his homework on it. My 8 yr old wants to jump in to keeping a lizard or a hampster but he's just not ready for it yet. Also I can't remember if it was on the list but water change buckets are handy to have. They sell them at big al's. I never trust that mine aren't leaching plastics into the water when I let it sit for days. "If you're afraid you'll make a mistake, you won't make anything." -Family Circus |

Best of luck. p.s. food, meds, water conditioners, perhaps a python, an air pump with some stones, one of those big shark heads and oh, oh every tank needs a little diver and a shipwreck. Oh, my favorite is a good beginner's level book. nothin too compicated cause it makes ya not wanna read it. I'm still pouring over mine even after a year.
