Why wouldnt you just call and ask anyways. It's not like whoever answers the phone is going to ask you are and check up on you later.

At least then you'll know if you're breaking the rules

On the filter issue...that depends on how long a drive it is between home and uni. If it's much over an hour that they'd be unplugged from school to home ect you'll need to consider some way of keeping the bacteria alive. Easiest will likely be to toss the filter pads or sponges in a bucket of water with a battery opperated air pump to keep them oxygenated....that or get someone to slosh the bucket the whole way home...don't spill though it'll smell up your car big time .

Reading the quote to say that only small tanks are allowed isn't logical, as it means they consider the aquarium itself to be a pet, because this quote considers pets and not containers (fish, small aquarium fish, aquarium as an adjective, as opposed to non-aquarium fish, whatever that may be).

This is at least the way I read it.

yeah i'm agreeing with ya. The 29 it is, at worst i get a 25$ fine and have to change the setup.

Do you think i can go with two 20 gallon filters and then transfer them to 10 gallon tanks at home for over winter break? They'de be biologically established then.

Actually I'd go with the 29...specially if everyone else is okay with it. I have a feeling they'd have more of an issue with two 10 gallons (or 5's) than one 29 ..don't ya just love uni logic .
If it's a new dorm building it's likely quite able to hold the weight. I know my freshman year we had bunkbeds...if they can support that type of weight they should be able to take a 55 gallon just fine ......

now that i'm thinking more and more about it i might be best off just going with a 10 leader as the center piece on the stand and two small 5 gallons (acrylic cheapos), one on each end of the large tank. Then stock the large tank with small tetras and have a single betta in each of the five gallon tanks, or maybe guppies in one? I don't know for sure but this setup of three tanks wouldn't be too bad to move home and they should complain less about three smallish tanks then one large on i would think.

*edit* i think i can do the 29 and get away with it....i've got a plan on how to deal with winter break also. the fives next to the ten look dumb because of hight kinda. All suggestsions are appreciated!

I have my own double single (room for two students). So I do not need to worry about a roomate ratting me out, all the guys i live with are also cool about tanks. I believe my RA would also be okay with it. Removing it i'm not sure about. I was thinking about stocking it lightly so i could move the fish home durring winter break and put them in two seperate ten gallons. Maybe I should just do two ten gallons?

I wouldn't worry about it being too heavy because they dorms are built pretty strong.

maybe i could just try and get my advisor to let me set it up in one of the class rooms?

Few things to consider...
~How large are the dorms?
~Will your roommate rat you out?
~How easily will you be able to remove the tank if told to get rid of it?
~How hard are you willing to fight the system?

The way it reads
No pets other than small aquarium fish
if that's exactly the way it's written then yes...you could technically keep a 250 gallon or however large would fit in the room so long as you only stocked it with nothing larger than a mid sized barb. However most dorm rules that I've seen have limited tank size to 10 gallons....and if you think that's tough, the art school my sister is starting in the fall is seriously considering no houseplants in addition to their no living creatures rule .
