hey guys.

i have a 3ft tank i was going to set up as marine, and i have it's got the coral sand, and the salt water in thier atm, but due to financial restraints i can;t afford to set it up completely for a while now.

so i was thinking of emptying the tank, cleaning it, and changing it back to a fw trop tank. i would be using a HOB 800/L ph filter.

my quetion is. would the coral sand substrate be ok for FW tropical fish ?

heres a pic of it

You could easily go with african cichlids. that is the perfect substrate for them and it buffers the ph to their level. you could do a small mbuna community or maybe a peacck breeding trio for the malawai. you could also go with tangs such as brichardi and calvus.

yeah!!

that would be cool. i was gonna go with with some bigger charcids but cichlids are cool, it would be a species only tank then...

so it is doable! thanks man

If you do African Chichlids, it doesn't need to be a sepcies-only tank. If you do tangs. you could fit alot of small fish.

Except for some catfish, like syndontis, the only fish that really go well with tangs are...tangs. For the small shelldwelling species, you could maybe add some dwarf puffers, but I can't see anything else. For some of the larger species, like calvus, you could probably add malwali fish like peacocks. However, if you can't buy tangs, I wouldn't worry about what to put with them. If that is all you can get, then I'd seriously think about looking in different areas. If you happen to visit any relatives, check out their LFSes. Otherwise, your kinda stuck with what you have.

Hope things work out for you

No you couldn't have malawis or dwarf puffers with tangs. How big is the tank in gallons.

A trio of peacocks with maybe a couple synodontis. Some good peacocks would be Aulonocara maylandi. They are smaller and peaceful. Avoid jacobfreibergi as they are bigger and more aggresive
