It's normal for plecos to find a hiding place and stay there. It's just what they do.

But a 6" pleco is too large to keep in a 20 gallon tank, especially if it's still growing.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

The pleco definitely moves, you do not see. He is probably roaming when you are in bed. A lot of pleco are shy and timid especially when small. I have a big bn that hides a lot during the day, sometimes I chase him out during a waterchange just to get a look at him. I agree that a 20 is too small for a growing 6 inch pleco.

there are a lot of really interesting plecos that don't get much more than 5" long, which would probably be okay in your tank, provided there was enough food for them and the water quality remained good.

rubber lips and bushynoses come to mind, but there are many many other "dwarf" plecos that may help to maintain algae with varying degrees of success. ask at your LFS.

you could also consider getting a school of otocincus... they're a great little algae eater, and stay under 2" long, so they'd be perfect. but, they are schooling, so get a group or at least 3-4.

good luck!
