It's not hard to remove a divider. If it's siloconesd in, just put the betta in a cup and use a switchblade. Or for folks that don't have weapons lying around the house(me, weapons any kind of kitchen knife should do.

Well some things have changed now.
For the last three weeks, my female White Cloud Mountain Minnow had been hovering in the back corner of my 25 gallon tank.
Since that tank was slightly overstocked, I decided to moved all three of my WCMMs(2 male and 1 female) into the 10 gallon with the ADFs.
I now plan on getting 4 more WCMMs to finish off the 10 gallon.

Thanks for all the help throughout this entire thread. Even though I'm currently not using any of the suggestions, there were many that I now plan on doing one day.

You could have 8.

I'm just wondering if the frogs would eat them. ADFs only eat really small fish (like fry) and neons are on the border. But it should be ok, as neons are really fast and ADFs are practically blind (and really, really slow).

The ADFs are in a 10 gallon.

Sorry for the delay. I was in Baton Rouge for almost a week, that's why I hadn't answered until now.

At most, how many Neon Tetras could I have in with the ADFs?

I'm only going to keep 2 Bettas in the divided tank with the sponge filter.

My tank with the ADFs already has a Whisper 10. That's why I'm now only thinking about stocking that tank.
I will be going with one of these options:
3 ADFs
3 male Guppies
2 Cherry Barbs
OR
3 ADFs
5-6 Pencilfish(whatever kind I can find)

It doesn't matter what kind of fish you are keeping, a filter is a filter. If you want 2 bettas, you can use your sponges. But, anything more than that, and you will want to invest in some good equipment. And to add on to pete's post, you can even go to cheaper chain stores like Petland and pick up a small whisper for $10 - $15.

Pencilfish are schoolers in my experience, - you should probably try to keep a minimum of 4 of them, but more is better. Remember, most pencils dont get very large.
There are several attractive varietys- I used to have Beckford's pencils, but the 3 lines, and one lined, are also very nice, and there is a nice new species I cant remember the name of.
You could still use the sponge filters, but hooking up a HOB would be in your best interest.

I know using a power filter would be the best bet, but I really want to make use of the sponge filter.

Maybe I should just get another male for the empty half. Then I can use some of the suggestions to finish my ADF 10 gallon. Pencilfish, Cherry Barbs, or male Guppies. What to do, what to do.:%)

I searched but couldn't find a lot of info. Are Pencilfish loners, shoalers, or schoolers?

Sponge filters are really only worthwhile in a bare bottom breeding tank that receives water changes on a daily to bi daily basis. You should really invest in a small hang on the back filter. Cascade 100 comes to mind- these filters are very good- they have a high filtration rate with a low output rate due to the biofalls water falls guard on front, and they have a very reasonable price! You should expect to pay no more than 25 dollars for a small cascade, and no more than 50 for the biggest one. (this is because the maufacturer provides them to retailers for amazingly low retail prices keep that in mind if you go looking), and a cascade filter is less likely to clog, and runs better longer than their competitors, with the exception only of Penguin/Emperor brand filters.

Not really sure about the filters, but I hate sponges. You'd be better off with a good old power filter. In theory, you can have 8 pigmys in a 10 gallon. Think about it: Roughly 1" per gallon 8(cories) x 1(" each)= 8" + 1 x 2" betta = 10" in 10 gallons. Sounds ok to me. But, just to be safe, I'd only start with 3 or 4 and work your way up. Who knows, you might be able to have more! Stocking is only as accurate as your machinery and your effort. If your good with water changes(maybe doing 50% instead of 20%, it doesn't take too much more effort) and possibly if you buy another filter, then there is no reason why you should not have the fish you want.

Nah, I wouldn't do a BN. Not only do they (most species) grow to four or five inches, they're waste-producing machines. They can foul up a small tank such as a ten gallon quickly, so I wouldn't suggest a bristlenose pleco for this tank.

6 at most
but why not a bristle nose they can live happily in a 10gal in my opinion and with weekly water changes the parameters should be in check

Lets say I do remove the divider. Keep in mind I only have a double sponge filter powered by a Whisper 20 airpump in this tank. My normal routine is 20% weekly water changes/sand vacs. With the one male Betta, about how many Pygmy Cories could I have? 8?

I have a 10 gallon tank divided in half. I have a male Betta on the one side and the other side is empty.

The tank is heated to 78F and it also has a sponge filter. The only decorations I currently have are some floating plastic plants and a DIY rock/gravel cave.

Any suggestions on what to put in the second half of the tank? The obvious choice would be another Betta, but I'm looking for other options.

Hi,
my hasbrosus seem very adept at locating and getting their food. Soon as put that food in there, they are scouring the gravel looking for it.
They should be fine with a betta!

Thanks for all the replies, everyone!

I originally had this Betta in another 10 gallon with African Dwarf Frogs. For the most part it was fine, but the Betta would not leave the ADF's food alone. The ADFs are so slow to eat that the Betta had plenty of time to eat all of his food and then pick all the frog food off of the sand. That's the reason I now have the Betta in the divided 10 gallon.

I like the Guppy idea. But I am currently planning on adding 3 to 5 male Guppies in my ADF tank. So I'd like to try something else in the divided tank.

I also like the Pencilfish idea. If I can find them locally, I'm pretty sure I'll pick up a few.

A small group of Cherry Barbs is also tempting. If Pencilfish aren't available, this will probably be the way I'll go.

Although I would love to have some Pygmy Cories, I don't want to have the same problem with feeding.
How efficiant are Pygmy Cories at finding and eating their food?

another betta like you said would be the best. i wouldn't go with females,b/c the scent of the males will make them fight,so you may only have one female.a few neons or small nonschooling barbs/tetras, or white cloud minnows.
